Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. MacFarlane has established a distinguished career in the field of physics, with a particular focus on engineering and data analysis. Since 2005, he has served as a professor at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where he has been instrumental in organizing personnel to enhance workflow and improve project outcomes. Dr. MacFarlane's tenure at SLAC is marked by significant contributions to the scientific community, including his involvement with a discovery team in the mid-1980s that advanced understanding of key phenomena and inspired international investment in large-scale research facilities.

Before accepting his current appointment, Dr. MacFarlane held a series of key positions at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. From 2017 to 2021, he excelled as the project director, overseeing critical projects and ensuring their successful execution. Between 2015 and 2017, he served as the chief research officer after previously (2009-2015) serving as associate laboratory director for particle physics and astrophysics, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the laboratory's scientific agenda. Before joining SLAC, Dr. MacFarlane was a professor at the University of California, San Diego from 1997 to 2005; in this position, he relied on experience gained at McGill University, where he was on faculty from 1987 to 1997, to serve a diverse student population.
