As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Colón Carrión is a distinguished scientist and STEM outreach specialist. Since 2024, she has served as a Program Associate at the Hispanic Access Foundation, playing a key role in collaborating with various organizations, particularly federal agencies, to recruit and manage interns working on research and outreach projects within these agencies. She oversees 20 interns across the United States and U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico, Florida, Texas and the Virgin Islands. She ensures that interns have the necessary resources and support to succeed within their agencies and develop into well-rounded professionals.
Prior to this, Dr Colon Carrion worked at Corteva Agriscience as a Plant Pathology Research Investigator in the Seed Applied Technology Fungicide Lab, where she managed multiple internal and external testing projects focused on evaluating the efficacy of chemical and biological fungicides in protecting against soil-borne fungal diseases in Midwest crops. She played a key role in developing an innovative, cross-collaborative protocol that reduced disease detection costs for proof-of-concept studies from $9K to $1K, while also exploring alternative solutions that lowered annual costs from $210K to $50K. Additionally, she served on the Corteva Outreach Steering Team, collaborating with a cross-functional group to design and implement outreach and educational events for the Indiana community.
Dr. Colón Carrión's commitment to science education is evident through her involvement with numerous civic projects in Puerto Rico. From 2020 to 2025, she served on the board of Ciencia en tus Manos, a non-profit organization in Puerto Rico that leverages social media to communicate science to the Puerto Rican community. Additionally, she is the founder of several outreach, educational, and leadership initiatives, including Líderes Boricuas en Ciencias Agrícolas, Micología en Ruedas and From the Classroom to the Farm.. In each of these initiatives, Nicole focused on creating programs that effectively bridge the gap between education and career development in STEM.
Her academic background is robust, having earned a Doctor of Philosophy in plant pathology from the University of Arizona in 2022. Dr. Colón Carrión has also obtained several certifications that have enhanced her professional capabilities, including A certificate in College Teaching from the University of Arizona, an Instructional Design Models Certification from the International Society for Educational Technology, and a Project Management Certification form Google.
In recognition of her contributions to science and education, Dr. Colón Carrión has received numerous awards, including the National Geographic Early Career Grant in 2019 and the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program Fellowship in 2018, among many others. Her achievements are further highlighted by her role as an explorer with the National Geographic Society—a prestigious accomplishment she considers one of her proudest career milestones.
Dr. Colón Carrión attributes her success to her family, who she feels have been some of her best role models. Through her mother's and sister's experiences as teachers, she learned the value of training and education. Her realization that one of the challenges in attracting people to pursue science as a career is the lack of practical, hands-on education, and she has made it her mission to help the community and guide the children and future leaders in this field.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Colón Carrión enjoys dancing, reading and spending time at the beach with her four dogs. These personal interests provide balance to her life dedicated to advancing STEM education and research efforts across diverse communities.
