Dr. Wagner-Loera is a distinguished professional in the field of education, renowned for her expertise in teaching, coaching and mentoring, cognitive psychology and communication. As the senior dissertation chair at Grand Canyon University since 2019, she has been instrumental in mentoring faculty to enhance their ability to build relationships and foster student growth. In addition to teaching content courses in the PhD and EdD as well as MA program, she supervises more than 20 dissertation learners, guiding them through their projects by helping them select topics and gather data. Her dedication to personal growth and passion for her work have led to the successful graduation of 25 students over the last four years, including 10 in 2024 alone. Additionally, she was selected through a rigorous application process to serve on the faculty advisory board (FAC) for the 2022/23 year.
In addition to her role at Grand Canyon University, Dr. Wagner-Loera has been an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland Global Campus since 2017. In this role, she focuses on faculty development and training, teaching various courses and personalizing instruction to accommodate diverse learners. Her commitment to improving communication processes among faculty members is evident through her leadership in faculty training sessions and mentoring initiatives.
Prior to her current positions, Dr. Wagner-Loera served as a full-time lecturer at the University of Maryland from 2008 to 2016, during which time she honed her skills in teaching and mentoring. At the University of Maryland, Dr. Wagner-Loera was selected to be part of the Faculty Technology Fellowship program driving innovation campuswide. She also served as a select member on the campus interdepartmental Curriculum and Assessment Committee further highlighting her focus on communication. She began her career as an instructor teaching English as a second language at Global Village Hawaii from 2007 until 2008. Her contributions to the academic community have been recognized with awards such as the Outstanding Faculty Award from the University of Maryland Global Campus in 2024 and the Outstanding Teaching Award from Global Village in 2008.
Shaping Dr. Wagner-Loera's career have been the significant achievements of her academic journey, beginning with a bachelor's degree in teaching German literature and teaching English as a second language from the University of Mannheim in Germany. She subsequently earned a master's degree in applied linguistics and TESOL from Hawaii Pacific University, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in cognition and instruction from Grand Canyon University in 2016. She is currently halfway through an artificial intelligence training program with the goal of obtaining certification.
Further distinguishing Dr. Wagner-Loera in her field is her membership with the American Psychological Association. Reflecting on her journey, she attributes her success to her passion for her work, excelling in her ability to guide students toward their goals, make education accessible and inspire individuals to reach beyond their limits. Outside her professional commitments, Dr. Wagner-Loera is actively involved in civic-minded organizations. She volunteers for clubs in which her children participate and contributes her time to the local school district. Additionally, she has served on an advisory council for a school for three years, demonstrating her dedication to community engagement.
Looking ahead, Dr. Wagner-Loera aspires to transition into an assistant position at Grand Canyon University to support supervisors for training purposes and eventually become an official faculty trainer. Additionally, she is dedicated to playing an active role in supporting the strategic future plan – a global initiative – at the University of Maryland Global Campus.
