As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing from over two decades of diverse research and development experience in industry and academia, including civic leadership service to the military and as an elected official, Dr. Burch represents Mississippi State University's Office of Research and Economic Development as an associate vice president for research. Dr. Burch also serves as the executive director of the nationally recognized Athlete Engineering Institute, a newly established center that grew out of a research program he founded in 2017. Athlete engineering represents his unique approach to combining human factors, engineering, human performance, technology and sports science into a research initiative focused on studying the predictive and preventative maintenance of the human machine. This unique approach centered around all athlete personas—sports athletes, industrial athletes who perform repetitive motion task work, tactical athletes such as emergency responders and warfighters, and at-risk athletes in rehabilitation and telehealth—implemented through the Athlete Engineering Institute, sets him apart in the growing field of human performance.

Alongside his work in integrating sports wearable technology into industrial and military environments, Dr. Burch founded the Advancements in Manufacturing Upskilling Program or AiM UP. This award-winning program is headquartered within the Athlete Engineering Institute and is dedicated to the standardization of advanced manufacturing training across Mississippi. Athlete Engineering is dedicated to the preservation of the workforce, while AiM UP centers around the implementation of technology automation to reduce musculoskeletal injuries through training.

Before joining Mississippi State University in the fall of 2016 as an assistant professor, Dr. Burch was a practicing engineer for 14 years. He worked on weapons systems for the Navy and satellite systems for NASA, supported the development of virtual reality hardware and software systems, and even spent time as an enterprise architect and configuration manager of the world's largest claims systems. His largest contribution was during his time at FedEx Express, where he led the development of new ruggedized handhelds for couriers and started the first autonomous vehicle research program. His lengthy portfolio of awarded patents demonstrates the diversity of his creativity, which has consistently grown throughout his time in both industry and academia.

Thanks to a strong group of fellow researchers and team members who share the same vision of generating new knowledge for the academic community, Dr. Burch has contributed to over 100 peer-reviewed articles and publications, nearly 50 awarded patents, and over $35 million in awarded funding since joining Mississippi State University. His highly productive, interdisciplinary team of world-class researchers comes from engineering, kinesiology, fashion design, sociology, communications and all sports teams at the university.

Dr. Burch holds a bachelor's degree in computer engineering from Mississippi State University, a master's degree in industrial and manufacturing systems engineering from Kansas State University, and a PhD in industrial and systems engineering from Mississippi State University. In addition to his professional and educational endeavors, Dr. Burch is a dedicated supporter of giving back to his community through activities like the local food pantry.

Throughout his career, Dr. Burch has consistently demonstrated his dedication to his work. He takes pride in building successful teams and watching his team members grow professionally, launch their initiatives, and lead careers that support the great people of Mississippi. His hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, and he credits his success to failing fast and failing forward, leaning into his competitive nature of always having a strategic plan. Looking forward, Dr. Burch intends to continue working to benefit the state of Mississippi, growing where he's planted, and giving everything he has to support the state's workforce and athletes of every kind.
