Carey, Jr. His expertise in appellate law is widely recognized; he has been instrumental in shaping legal discourse through his independent practice. His role involves leading a clinic on amicus curiae briefs, allowing him to engage with faculty and students to explore significant legal issues.
Mr. Carey's career began in 1965 when he clerked for federal district court judges, an experience that laid the foundation for his future endeavors. He spent a decade teaching law before transitioning to serve as an appellate attorney in the major violators division of the Suffolk County District Attorney's office for four years. This role honed his skills in handling complex legal cases and set the stage for his subsequent move into private practice.
Mr. Carey practiced independently in Brookline before joining Dwyer and Collora, a mid-sized Boston firm that later merged into Hogan Lovells. His tenure at these firms enriched his understanding of diverse legal challenges and client needs. Throughout his career, Mr. Carey has been actively involved with several professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, Plymouth County Bar Association, and Massachusetts Bar Association, where he has chaired the amicus committee.

Beyond his professional life, Mr. Carey is deeply engaged in civic activities. He serves as a trustee for the Hingham Public Library and is active in local civic initiatives. His commitment to community service is reflected in numerous awards, including the President's Award from the Massachusetts Bar Association and recognition from Mass Lawyers Weekly's Massachusetts Lawyers Hall of Fame in 2024. Additionally, he co-authored "Massachusetts Appellate Practice," a legal practice guide published by LexisNexis.
While his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Carey is most proud of helping to reinstate a Massachusetts state court judge's salary after she was suspended without pay following an indictment for allegedly failing to cooperate with ICE. He assembled a team to file an amicus brief in the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. This case profoundly impacted preserving the independence of the judiciary in Massachusetts, a principle established in the Massachusetts Constitution of 1780, written by John Adams.
Born in Quincy, Mr. Carey enjoys gardening and values time spent with his family, including his wife Ann and their children Lisa and Tom. Looking ahead, he plans to continue practicing law and teaching at Boston College Law School, driven by a passion for both fields that has defined his illustrious career.
