Dr. Bender is a distinguished professional in the fields of nanotechnology and pharmaceuticals, currently serving as a senior scientist at Benuvia Operations LLC since 2022. In this role, he is instrumental in developing manufacturing processes for pharmaceuticals using a contract manufacturing and development model. He is responsible for responding to client proposals for development campaigns and working on the ground to develop proof of concept process chemistry. His work ensures that these processes scale into manufacturing to yield high-quality products while meeting compliance with the Food and Drug Administration and Drug Enforcement Agency standards, particularly as Benuvia specializes in controlled substances. His focus is on aiding therapeutics companies in advancing psychedelics and other fringe neuropsychiatric pharmaceuticals into trials.
Before his current position, Dr. Bender founded Bender Research LLC to provide chemical research and educational services, recently facilitating a nanotechnology continuing education course and providing beverage formulation consultations to small businesses. Prior to founding his consulting firm, Dr. Bender was a research scientist at Nulixir Inc. from 2021 to 2022, where he honed his expertise in nanotechnology and process development manufacturing complex emulsion formulations in nutritional beverages. His career began with academic roles at the University of Texas at Austin, where he served as a graduate teaching assistant and graduate research assistant from 2014 to 2021. During this time, he also held the position of director of academic affairs from 2017 to 2018. His early career included roles as an undergraduate teaching assistant and research assistant at Loyola University Chicago from 2011 to 2014.
Dr. Bender's academic journey is marked by significant achievements that have contributed to his professional success. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 2020, where he developed new strategies for increasing solar energy efficiency in next-generation solar cells and optical tools for studying the behavior of light and energy flow in nanomaterials. This work not only provided fundamental physics insights but also laid the groundwork for his future endeavors in nanotechnology. He holds dual Bachelor of Science degrees in mathematics and chemistry from Loyola University Chicago, both obtained in 2014. Additionally, he pursued coursework in improvisational theater at Coldtowne Theater from 2017 to 2019, which helped develop his adaptability to various environments and playful problem-solving style.
Throughout his career, Dr. Bender has been recognized with numerous awards, including most notably the Paul F. Barbara Endowment for Excellence in Nanoscience in 2019 from the University of Texas at Austin and Robert. A. Mode Memorial Scholarship for Chemistry in 2013 from Loyola University Chicago. His scholarly contributions include co-authoring several publications, such as "Surface States Mediate Triplet Energy Transfer in Nanocrystal-Acene Composite Systems" and "Singlet Fission Involves an Interplay between Energetic Driving Force and Electronic Coupling in Perylenediimide Films" in 2018. He attributes his success to his ability to adapt to different disciplines and work in an interdisciplinary manner, making novel impacts in his field.
Dr. Bender is actively involved in various industry-related organizations, including the American Physical Society, Optica, the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His leadership roles have included serving as a representative for the Department of Chemistry within the Graduate Student Assembly and as a departmental relations officer for the Council of Graduate Chemists.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Bender enjoys improvisational comedy, which complements his dynamic approach to problem-solving and innovation. Looking ahead, he aims to grow into a director position where he can guide the technical direction of research programs that balance fundamental and technological impacts. A core goal is to mentor junior scientists entering the workforce and maximize their societal impact through mindful and rigorous scientific advancements.
