As the owner of Arc Tech LLC since 1999, he has dedicated over two decades to advancing welding technology and practices. Mr. Komlos's leadership at Arc Tech LLC has been marked by innovation and a commitment to excellence, underscored by his collaboration with highly skilled welders. Leveraging over 30 years of continued success as a welder, he and his team offer inspection and testing services, particularly for welding evaluations and quality improvement.
Before becoming an entrepreneur, Mr. Komlos was a quality assurance manager and welding supervisor at Mark Steel Corporation from 1991 to 1994. During this time, he managed a $9 million project to create a nuclear bomb simulator, showcasing his ability to oversee complex engineering tasks. Mr. Komlos's earlier experience included a tenure as a quality assurance manager at United Precision Machine & Engineering between 1985 and 1991, where he honed his skills in ensuring the highest standards in precision machining and welding procedures.
Mr. Komlos's career began with hands-on experience as a fitter/welder at Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, where he was part of the team constructing components for nuclear reactors. This foundational experience laid the groundwork for his later achievements, including serving as a welding instructor at Salt Lake Community College from 1980 to 1992. Mr. Komlos's dedication to education was further evidenced by his role as a consultant for the International Iron Workers between 2006 and 2016, where he qualified welding procedures nationwide. Highly educated, Mr. Komlos holds a bachelor's degree in English and a Master of Science in structural engineering from the University of Utah since 2009. His master's thesis, Methods and Systems for Mitigating Residual Tensile Stresses, was granted US Patent 7,690,553 in 2010. He has also been recognized for contributions to the field through various professional credentials. He holds multiple certifications from the American Welding Society and the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, including AWS Certified Welding Engineer, Senior Certified Welding Inspector and ASNT Level III - PT & MT.
Mr. Komlos's involvement extends to his professional endeavors and creative pursuits. He has a long history of volunteer participation. As a life-time member of the American Welding Society, he began his service as the Secretary, and later Chair, of the Utah Section in 1999. In 2007, he was elected to serve as the district director of the Rocky Mountain region, District 20; a position he held until 2013. In recognition of his contributions, he received the AWS President's Award in 2012. For his distinguished organizational leadership, enhancing both the image and the impact of the welding industry, Mr. Komlos was inducted into the class of AWS Counselors in 2013. His continued commitment to community service is reflected in his volunteer work with KRCL Radio of which he has been a member since 1982.
Among his most notable contributions, Mr. Komlos worked on aerospace welding projects including the design and inspection of Class B, mission-critical welded components installed in the NASA Mars Rover, Perseverance. These welds are part of the MOXIE experiment to extract oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, necessary for future inter-planetary missions.
