Ms. Schlichting enjoyed a distinguished career in health care marked by her leadership roles and significant contributions to the industry. Her journey began as a volunteer at Akron City Hospital during her high school years, sparking her interest in health care. After completing her education, she worked as a nurse aide to gain clinical experience. By age 28, Ms. Schlichting became the chief operating officer of Akron City Hospital, a 650-bed hospital in Akron, Ohio. Her rapid ascent continued when she became the chief operating officer of Riverside Methodist Hospital, a 1,000-bed hospital in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 33.

Ms. Schlichting's tenure at Henry Ford Health System was particularly notable. She served as the president and chief executive officer from 2003 to 2017, during which she navigated the organization through Detroit's various economic challenges. Under her leadership, the system doubled in size and won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2011. Before this role, Ms. Schlichting excelled as the president and chief executive officer of Henry Ford Hospital from 2001 to 2003 and held various executive positions within the system, beginning in 1998. Beyond her significant roles at Henry Ford Health System, Ms. Schlichting served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer at Summa Health System from 1997 to 1998, following her role as the president of the eastern region for Catholic Health Initiatives from 1996 to 1997. Earlier, Ms. Schlichting held leadership positions at Riverside Methodist Hospital and Akron City Hospital.

Laying a strong foundation for her career, Ms. Schlichting earned a Bachelor of Arts in public policy studies, magna cum laude, from Duke University in 1976 and a Master of Business Administration in health administration and accounting, from Cornell University in 1979. Her initial aspiration to become a physician shifted toward health policy during her college years, leading her to focus on public policy and health care administration.

In addition to her executive roles, Ms. Schlichting has been an influential figure on numerous boards. She is currently a director at Encompass Health, Walgreens Boots Alliance and Baxter International. Her involvement extends to academia, where she chairs the board at Duke University Health System and as a trustee of Duke University. Ms. Schlichting's civic contributions included chairing the Detroit Chamber, the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, the Federal Commission on Care from 2015 to 2016 and co-chairing the Michigan Economic Recovery Council from 2020 to 2021.

Ms. Schlichting is an accomplished author with several publications to her name, including the book "Unconventional Leadership: What Henry Ford and Detroit Taught Me About Reinvention and Diversity" in 2015, and the article "Creating a Culture of Disruption, Change and Innovation" in 2021.

In light of her success, Ms. Schlichting received dozens of accolades, including induction into the Michigan Business Women Hall of Fame with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, the Dean Conley Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives in 2021 and induction into the Modern Healthcare Hall of Fame in 2022. She also received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Walsh College in 2008, an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University in 2015, an Honorary Doctor of Public Service from Central Michigan University in 2010, and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Towson University in 2020. Excited about future accomplishments, she plans to continue serving on various boards to enhance their operations and intends to write another book focusing on governance and her experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ms. Schlichting's dedication to learning and sharing knowledge remains a driving force behind her ongoing contributions to health care and beyond.
