MOUNT SINAI, NY, April 24, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Katherine V. Biagas, MD, FCCM, FAAP, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Biagas is a distinguished expert in pediatric critical care, currently serving as a professor of pediatrics, director of the division of pediatric critical care and vice chair for faculty affairs at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. With over 30 years of experience in her field, she dedicates much of her time to caring for critically ill or injured infants, children and young adults. She leads a team of 10 physicians and three nurse practitioners, further collaborating with nursing leadership to guide 60 nurses. Her responsibilities include overseeing intensive care unit operations, quality improvement of clinical services, ongoing research within the intensive care unit and the educational needs of physicians and nurse practitioners. Additionally, she is proud that under her leadership as vice chair for faculty affairs, nearly 15% of faculty have been promoted.
Prior to her current roles at Stony Brook University, Dr. Biagas was an associate professor of pediatrics at Columbia University Medical Center from 1999 to 2018. During this period, she also directed the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program, graduating approximately 50 fellows. Her concurrent tenure as associate director of the division of pediatric critical care medicine at Columbia University spanned nine years. Earlier in her career, she served as an assistant professor at Columbia University from 1999 to 2010 and Yale University School of Medicine from 1992 to 1999.
Dr. Biagas's contributions extend beyond academia into professional organizations. She is the past chairman of the Accreditation and Learning Strategies Committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine and has been a fellow with the same organization since 1993. Her leadership roles have included serving as president of the New York Society of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and chairing the Pediatric Critical Care Colloquium. She is also a board member of the Chinese American Pediatric Scholars Foundation and a fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Educationally, Dr. Biagas earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology with honors from the University of Chicago in 1982, followed by an MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1986. She pursued further education with coursework toward an EdD in adult learning and organizational leadership at Teachers College at Columbia University, where she also served as a physician adviser. Additionally, Dr. Biagas holds certifications in pediatric critical care medicine.
Dr. Biagas's professional excellence has been recognized with numerous awards, including eight Presidential Citations from the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the Best Care Recognition Award from the Chaim Medical Resource Foundation in 2015. Outside her professional duties, she is active in community service through her volunteer work as a committee member for her homeowners association in Long Island, New York, and as a donor to various charities.
Outside her professional life, Dr. Biagas enjoys traveling internationally with her husband. Reflecting on her career, she attributes her success to her supportive family and her parents' emphasis on education. She also acknowledges the role that her commitment to self-improvement and community service has played in her achievements. In the upcoming years, she aims to complete her doctoral degree and plans to transition into consulting roles that focus on supporting others' growth and provide public speaking opportunities.
