Mr. Edward Sumaila, a first-generation American, was born in Dadiesoaba, in the Ahafo region of Ghana, into a family of 22, as the sixth of 19 siblings. His parents, though uneducated, were hardworking cocoa farmers, instilled in him the values of perseverance, resilience, and determination. Despite the challenges of growing up in a rural setting with limited access to resources, Mr. Sumaila transformed his early experiences into opportunities, using them as motivation to build a successful career and make a meaningful impact on society.
Mr. Sumaila is a certified cyber security specialist with a track record of safeguarding organizations against cyber threats by conducting security assessments, developing risk management plans, and implementing security controls that comply with industry standards and regulations. He has accumulated over 10 years of diverse experience as a consultant in positions such as information security analyst, business intelligence data analyst, tableau developer, AWS certified solution architect, loss reserving analyst, and compliance analyst with Alltypes Insurance, Progressive Insurance, and JPMorgan Chase among others. Currently, he serves as a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserve and also trades as a tax preparer, fiduciary, licensed health plan advisor, freight forwarder, and business consultant.
Academically, Mr. Sumaila is advancing his knowledge by pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in information system management at Walden University. He holds a Master of Arts in actuarial science and statistics from Ball State University, obtained in 2017; a Master of Science in petroleum, energy economics, and finance from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, completed in 2015 and a bachelor's degree in actuarial science from the University for Development Studies, Ghana, earned in 2010.
Mr. Sumaila 's professional credentials include AWS Certified Solution Architect Associate, CompTIA Security+, and longtime earned Property, Casualty, Life, Accident, and Health Insurance licenses with the National Insurance Producer Registry. He provides insurance consultancy services as a fiduciary and insurance broker.
An entrepreneur at heart, Mr. Sumaila is the owner of six thriving businesses: Alltypes Insurance, Duatsung Enterprise, Naaba Logistics, National Express Transportation, Naaba Techs, and Naaba Realty and Construction Solutions. He is currently seeking investment partners to expand his business ventures globally, with plans to further this expansion upon completing his Ph.D.
Mr. Sumaila's journey has been marked by numerous accolades, including the Ghana Getfund Scholarship (2014), The University of Akron Graduate Assistantship (2015), and Ball State University Graduate Assistantship (2016-2017). He was also honored with the Outstanding Graduate Assistant award by the department of mathematics at Ball State University and as an actuarial student received recognition from the Black Society of Actuaries in 2017.
As a dedicated community leader and advocate, Mr. Sumaila is the founder and director of the Charity Watch Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on supporting orphans, women, children, and the elderly through sustainable livelihood programs. His passion for community development extends his roles as a member of the Ohio Ghana Festival organizing committee, and provide support to the Ohio Ghana Council, and the United Ghanaian Northerners Association in Columbus, Ohio. As a graduate of the New American Leadership Academy, he continues to volunteer as a trainer, educator, and counselor, mentoring aspiring new Americans and community leaders. His global impact includes serving as global financial director of the International Youth Network of the United Nations Security Resolution council 2250, empowering young people with resources and skills to become change makers within their communities. In addition, Mr. Sumaila is a lifetime member of the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA), aligning with its mission to inspire Americans to support the principles and vital work of the United Nations.
Mr. Sumaila attributes his success to his unwavering determination. Despite the challenges, including walking three miles to school at the age of five, he became the first in his extended family to earn a bachelor's degree. Outside of his professional endeavors, Sumaila enjoys traveling, watching movies, playing games, and cooking.
