Mr. Murillo's career began at Figg & Muller Engineers, where he served as assistant technical director from 1978 to 1986. During this time, he was pivotal in constructing the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa, Florida, the first concrete segmental cable-stayed bridge in the U.S. His work with Mr. Muller, his mentor and direct supervisor, laid the foundation for his future achievements. In 1986, Mr. Murillo joined Parsons Brinckerhoff as senior vice president, advocating for collaboration between designers and constructors and contributing to the innovation of design-build projects.

In 2015, Mr. Murillo became the president and chief executive officer of Mural Corp SRL, a position he held until 2018. He then briefly owned and directed J.A. Murillo Engineering and Construction Services before founding ECIS Inc. in 2019. Mr. Murillo's commitment to integrating construction and engineering has been instrumental in addressing longstanding challenges within the industry.

Beyond his fieldwork, Mr. Murillo has shared his knowledge as a visiting lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, teaching a course in concrete bridge design. He also contributed chapters to several books, including one published by the National Academy of Sciences.

Mr. Murillo's academic background includes a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in engineering with a specialization in structures from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His dedication to continuous self-improvement and staying abreast of technological advancements has been crucial to his success. Mr. Murillo's leadership is further enriched by his membership in esteemed organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Concrete Institute and the American Segmental Bridge Institute. Throughout his career, Mr. Murillo has received numerous accolades for his contributions to engineering. In 1983, he received the Presidential Award in Engineering from President Ronald Reagan and was later honored with the Pioneer Engineering Award from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers in 2005.
