Dr. Wall has built a distinguished reputation in the field of anesthesiology and made significant contributions to the University of Minnesota's Department of Anesthesiology since 2013. As the JJ Buckley Professor and chairman, he has been instrumental in transforming the department from a private practice entity into a leading academic institution. Under his leadership, the department boasts 75 faculty members, 40 residents, 10 fellows and a rotating assembly of medical students, who collaborate to provide comprehensive anesthesia services, including critical care, pediatric, cardiac, transplant and critical care. Notably, the department maintains an active research arm with National Institutes of Health funding and has achieved a national ranking of 32.
In addition to his role at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Wall serves as the senior vice president at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and senior vice president for perioperative medicine and critical care systems. His previous positions include professor and chief of clinical anesthesiology at Washington University in St. Louis from 2007 to 2013 and associate professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center from 2003 to 2007. Dr. Wall initiated his academic career as an assistant professor at Wake Forest University from 1998 to 2003, and he served at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 1994 to 1998.
Dr. Wall's expertise in cardiac anesthesia and critical care is widely recognized. He completed fellowships in critical care medicine at Stanford University and cardiothoracic anesthesiology at the University of Washington. Additionally, Dr. Wall's honorable military service as a major in the United States Air Force, which acknowledged him with the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal, and at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center further honed his skills in anesthesiology.
Exceptional educational credentials forged a strong foundation for Dr. Wall's advancement. He completed a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry at the University of the Pacific in 1983 and a Doctor of Medicine from Dartmouth College in 1987. He attributes his success thus far to having productive working relationships with exceptional mentors and colleagues throughout his career, and Dr. Wall counts rebuilding the anesthesiology department at the University of Minnesota as his favorite achievement.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wall has maintained active involvement in several professional organizations. Notably, he has held leadership roles in the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists and served on various committees within the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Society of Anesthesiology. His career achievements have been recognized with numerous awards, including the S.T. "Buddy" Harris Distinguished Chair in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology from the UT Southwestern Medical School and a Presidential Citation for Outstanding Contributions from the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Wall also humbly accepted the Teacher of the Year designation from both UT Southwestern and the United States Air Force.
Dr. Wall enjoys a fulfilling personal life with his wife and their two children. In his leisure time, he engages in playing golf and gardening. Looking toward the future, Dr. Wall aims to elevate the University of Minnesota's Department of Anesthesiology into one of the top 20 programs in the United States, continuing his legacy of excellence in academic medicine.
