Mr. Coughlin is a proud military veteran. His illustrious naval career spanned from 1981 to 2015, culminating in his command of the USS Bainbridge from 2006 to 2008, which he counts as a pinnacle career achievement and reflective of his exceptional leadership and operational acumen. In that role, he held the immense responsibility of 300 crew members and oversaw global missions, executing independent decisions under high-risk circumstances including adverse weather and proximity to other ships. Mr. Coughlin's naval service also included roles such as commanding officer of Destroyer Squadron TWO and Patrol Coastal Squadron ONE, as well as various strategic positions within the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Joint Staff.

Exceptional academic credentials helped forge a strong foundation for Mr. Coughlin's advancement. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical sciences and marine engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1988 before pursuing graduate studies. He now holds a master's degree in foreign affairs from the U.S. Naval War College in 2001 and a Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School, which he completed in 1998. He remains actively involved in prestigious organizations, including the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Virginia Ship Repair Association, and he exhibits a dedication to civic engagement through his support for organizations like Tunnel to Towers and Wounded Warriors. Additionally, Mr. Coughlin has authored publications for the United States Naval Institute Proceedings, contributing valuable insights into naval operations and strategy.
