With over five decades of experience, he has honed his expertise in the legal field, particularly in commercial law, where he is recognized for his seasoned knowledge and skill. His journey began at Rosenstock, McSherry, Burgee, Bower and Philips in 1974, where he began a solid foundation for his legal career. In 1981, he and his partner, Richard R. Burgee, founded Rosenstock, Burgee & Welty P.A., which became the Frederick, Maryland office of Miles & Stockbridge after a 1987 merger with the said firm.

In 1996, Mr. Welty achieved a significant milestone by being elected chairman of the law firm Miles & Stockbridge. This appointment was notable as he became the first chairman from outside the firm's Baltimore office. During his tenure, he navigated the firm through a challenging period marked by "merger mania" among larger legal firms. With the support of the previous chairman, Mr. Welty successfully addressed internal debates about potential mergers, ensuring the firm's continued operation despite some departures.

Mr. Welty's educational background laid the groundwork for his successful career. He earned a Juris Doctor from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary in 1974 and a bachelor's degree from Mount St. Mary's University in 1971. His academic achievements have shaped his legal acumen and professional success.

Mr. Welty has formed many close and confidential relationships with his clients throughout his career and deeply understood his clients' businesses.
