Ms. Gomez's program offers a unique merger of teaching and applied work and allows students to fill a minimum of 450 prescriptions for eyeglasses each school year; notably, these services are provided free of charge to students, parents, extended family members and the community.
Ms. Gomez initiated her teaching career in the secondary school setting, where she honed her skills as an educator, and she was on the faculty of Grace Dodge High School for three years before joining George Westinghouse High School, where she served for 15 years. In each role, Ms. Gomez demonstrated a commitment to fostering professional growth among her students, securing permanent career placements for many and paving the way for their future success.
Exceptional educational credentials further shape Ms. Gomez's presence in her field. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from The City University of New York and proudly completed the Substitute Vocational Assistant Program at St. Francis College in 1995. She counts her courage, adequate preparation and ability to advocate for her students as vital to her success thus far, and Ms. Gomez prioritizes open and productive communication to help secure support for her initiatives.
Ms. Gomez actively seeks opportunities for civic engagement and is involved with the Council at New York City College of Technology and Lions Clubs International. She also supports the Good Samaritan Children's Home in Kenya and makes donations to the Vision Council of America. Ms. Gomez's many meaningful contributions have been acknowledged with several accolades, including the Teacher of the Year Award in 2019, the Innovation Wise Award in 2018 and the Daily News Hometown Hero Award in Education.
To achieve balance, Ms. Gomez enjoys spending time with her son and family, and she finds joy in traveling, cooking and taking vacations. Looking toward the future, she plans to continue her work while partnering with organizations in California to facilitate physician rotations for eye care. Ultimately, Ms. Gomez's objective is to provide as many pairs of eyeglasses as possible for the community, starting with young people who can receive eyeglasses made by students under her guidance.
