Dr. Stillman has established a distinguished career as an expert in the history and culture of Jews in the Islamic world, as well as Islam and the Islamic world. A professional career spanning over five decades, marked by significant contributions to academia and scholarship, he has held the title of Schusterman/Josey Professor Emeritus of Judaic History at the University of Oklahoma since 1995.

Before his tenure in Oklahoma, Dr. Stillman was a professor of Near Eastern history, languages and cultures at Binghamton University, State University of New York, from 1993 to 1995. His tenure on campus began 20 years earlier in 1973 when he was appointed professor of history and Arabic.

In addition to his permanent positions, Dr. Stillman has been a visiting professor at several prestigious institutions worldwide. His international teaching experience included roles at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations in Paris, the Summer University of Amsterdam, and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in Germany. He has also delivered lectures as a Momigliano lecturer at the University of Chicago and as a Sherman lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Dr. Stillman remains active in the classroom today during the spring semester at the Rothberg International School at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel.

Dr. Stillman's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in oriental studies, magna cum laude, in 1970. He furthered his education with postdoctoral coursework in rabbinical studies at The Jewish Theological Seminary in 1971. Dr. Stillman attributes much of his success to the guidance of inspiring educators, including his mentor, the renowned scholar SD Goitein.

As part of his continued dedication to academia, Dr. Stillman has been involved in chairing the academic council for the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa. Beyond academia, he is actively engaged with civic-minded organizations. He is a founding member of the Israel Institute since 2012 and serves on the advisory board for the World Union of Jewish Studies. Dr. Stillman's fundraising efforts extend to Hillel International and the Schusterman Center for Judaic & Israel Studies of the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Stillman's scholarly work includes several publications, such as "The Jews of Arab Lands," released in 1979, and "The Jews of Arab Lands in Modern Times," released in 1991. These seminal works are still used as core texts globally and have been reviewed by leading newspapers such as the Sunday New York Times and the Times of London. In addition to his books, Dr. Stillman has been the executive editor for the "Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World," published by BRILL, since 2005. Moreover, he is known for completing his late wife's magnum opus, "Arab Dress: A Short History - From the Dawn of Islam to Modern Times," which was published and translated into Arabic. Dr. Stillman remains committed to various projects, including completing a forthcoming book on North Africa and continuing work on his late wife's dictionary of Arabic clothing.

Throughout his career, Dr. Stillman has been recognized with numerous awards for his academic contributions. These accolades include the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1986, Distinguished Humanist Award, Ohio State University in 2000, Allianz Visiting Professorship for Islamic and Jewish Studies from Ludwig-MaximiliansUniversität München in 2011, the Gary B. Cohen Distinguished Faculty Award from the David L. Boren College of International Studies at the University of Oklahoma in 2013, and the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2023, Rothberg International School, The Hebrew University.
