Currently serving as the director of program excellence and recognition at the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center at Hartford HealthCare, Dr. Machado is a distinguished neurologist specializing in movement disorders. The center, which he developed alongside a colleague, has grown from a single location established in 2016 to five centers across the state, making it one of the largest specialty centers for movement disorder care in the United States. Hartford HealthCare offers advanced treatment options such as deep brain stimulation and focused ultrasound and provides a wide range of supportive services including social work, neuropsychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and integrative medicine. Additionally, the center provides free services such as massages and acupuncture as well as classes in dance, Tai Chi and yoga.
Prior to establishing the center Hartford HealthCare, Dr. Machado was an assistant clinical professor in the division of movement disorders at Yale University School of Medicine from 2009 to 2016. During his tenure at Yale, he honed his skills in clinical care and teaching while contributing to the academic community through research and mentorship. His transition to Hartford HealthCare marked a significant milestone in his career as he embarked on building a new model of care that brings services directly into communities rather than requiring patients to travel to a central location.
Dr. Machado's professional journey is supported by his extensive education and training. He completed a neurology residency program at Yale University School of Medicine in 2009 after finishing an internal medicine residency there in 2006. Furthermore, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 2005 and a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience from Trinity College-Hartford in 2001. To augment his knowledge and qualifications, he is certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
As a commitment to his field, Dr. Machado has been actively involved with industry-related organizations such as the International Neurotoxin Association, the International Association of Parkinsonism and Related Disorders and the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. He is also a member of the American Neurological Association, the New Haven County Medical Association, the American Academy of Neurology and Doctors for America. Sharing his expertise and innovative approach to health care, he has delivered important speeches at events such as the Annual Symposium for the Parkinson's Foundation and the International Essential Tremor Foundation Connecticut Chapter.
In addition to his professional memberships, Dr. Machado is equally engaged with several civic-minded organizations. He serves on the board of the American Parkinson's Disease Association in Connecticut and is part of the medical advisory board for the Stiff Person Syndrome Research Foundation. His involvement extends to the Parkinson's Foundation, the International Essential Tremor Foundation, the National Ataxia Foundation and the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation, highlighting his extensive dedication to advancing knowledge and best practices within the realm of movement disorders.
In his personal life, Dr. Machado enjoys spending time with his three children who are active in hockey, ballet and gymnastics. Looking to the future, he intends to transform the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center at Hartford HealthCare into a destination facility with enhanced services and nationwide branding while furthering partnerships with national organizations to increase its recognition across the United States.
