Best known for his 24 years operating a solo private practice in Atlanta and his 14-year tenure at the prestigious Joslin Clinic in Boston, Dr. Flood has made lasting contributions to diabetes care both in the United States and internationally.

Most recently, Dr. Flood served as the medical director of the Georgia Center for Diabetes. He previously established and operated his own private diabetology practice in Atlanta, Georgia, where he earned widespread recognition for his hands-on, deeply personal approach to patient care. Over the years, he earned a reputation for his strong patient relationships, taking pride in guiding them with clarity and compassion. Dr. Flood has helped many understand that with proper diabetes management, they could avoid complications and significantly reduce cardiovascular risk.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Flood was a physician on the medical staff at the Joslin Clinic, where he initially trained and then remained for 14 years. His involvement there began during his medical studies, when he completed an elective at the clinic that solidified his lifelong dedication to diabetes care. He completed his residency and internship in internal medicine at the University of Michigan, following receipt of his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Buffalo. Dr. Flood's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in pre-medicine from Niagara University.

Dr. Flood's contributions to the field extend beyond the clinic. He is the co-author of "Type 1 Diabetes: Where We Were, Are, Will Be: A Candid Doctor-Patient Conversation," written with John H. Plunkett. His 1982 research publication, "Increased Incidence of Type I Diabetes in Children of Older Mothers," broke new ground in the field and remains widely cited. Over the years, he has delivered lectures across the globe, including in Egypt, China, Taiwan, Central and South America, and played a foundational role in organizing the diabetes society in Bermuda.

A fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, Dr. Flood has been recognized for his leadership, scholarship and lifelong commitment to improving the lives of those living with diabetes. Before entering medicine, he also served two years as a guided missile officer at Nike missile bases in the Boston-Providence Defense Area, highlighting the discipline and sense of duty that have shaped his career.

Now retired, Dr. Flood remains engaged with the medical community through conference attendance and continued advocacy for diabetes education. He enjoys spending time gardening, golfing and reflecting on a lifetime of work that he describes as deeply fulfilling.
