In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in overseeing formulation and innovation projects, leading to significant advancements in the company's product offerings. By 2020, his expertise was recognized with a promotion to executive director of R&D formulation and innovation for the Asia Pacific region. This role took him to Shanghai, China, where he led efforts in makeup development, skincare development and makeup innovation across the region and increased his knowledge in the field.

Returning to Long Island, New York, in 2023, Mr. Friel assumed the position of executive director of R&D formulation, innovation and operations on a global scale. In this role, he was responsible for driving innovation in global skincare products until 2024. Despite his successful tenure at Estée Lauder, economic challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic led to his departure from the company.

Throughout his career, Mr. Friel has been recognized for his contributions to the field of cosmetic chemistry. He holds several patents, including those for discontinuous surface coating for particles and encapsulation compositions comprising liquid crystal particles. His dedication to mentoring others is evident through his involvement in reverse mentoring programs at Estée Lauder.

Broadly experienced in skincare, Mr. Friel specializes in SPF development, a highly specialized field where expertise is rare. In the U.S. and many other countries, sunscreens are classified as drugs, requiring a deep understanding of regulatory standards. He possesses comprehensive knowledge of drug formulation, distribution, sales strategies and safety protocols — expertise that has been instrumental in his journey at Estée Lauder.

Mr. Friel's academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in marine biology from Long Island University, obtained in 2000, and a Master of Business Administration from Dowling College, earned in 2004. Beyond his education, he attributes his achievements to his passion for science and creativity, which have driven him throughout his career.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Friel is actively involved in the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians. He has also participated in Beauty Accelerate events and received recognition as the Young Scientist of the Year from the Society of Cosmetic Chemists.

In his personal life, Mr. Friel enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife and their three children. He is also passionate about sports, such as volleyball, American football and golf, as well as construction and woodworking projects.
