BOSTON, MA, May 28, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Justin M. Brown, MD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Hailing from almost two decades of experience in health care and education, Dr. Brown serves as an esteemed Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School, a position he has held since 2019. His expertise in the field is further exemplified by his concurrent roles as the Director of Reconstructive Neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Head of the Massachusetts General Paralysis Center, a multidisciplinary center for the treatment of paralyzing disorders which he established in 2017. His pioneering work in reconstructive neurosurgery focuses on restoring movement and independence to patients left paralyzed due to spinal cord injuries, nerve injuries, brachial plexus injuries, strokes, and other neurological disorders. In 2008, he established the first center devoted to treating all individuals with paralysis and published the concepts supporting this center in Oxford University Press's book, "Restorative Neurology of Spinal Cord Injury."

Prior to his current roles, Dr. Brown served as an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of Peripheral Nerve Surgery at the University of California, San Diego from 2011 to 2017. Before that, he was an Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis from 2008 to 2011.

Dr. Brown's professional affiliations include membership in the Sunderland Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and American Society for Peripheral Nerve. He also serves as president of the AANS/CNS Peripheral Nerve Task Force, reflecting his leadership and commitment to advancing neurosurgical practices.

Dr. Brown began his higher educational journey by earning a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University in 1996, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2001. He completed a residency in Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine in 2007, expanding his medical knowledge and creating the International Society for Restorative Neurology under the mentorship of Dr. Milan Dimitrijevic, the pioneer of restorative neurology. Afterward, he pursued a fellowship in peripheral nerve surgery in the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine from 2007 to 2008.

Dr. Brown was one of the first in the world to demonstrate that many patients with spinal cord injury could have arm and hand function restored even years after their injuries with nerve transfer surgery. He has also done pioneering work in restoring bladder function by transferring motor nerves to the autonomic nerves of the bladder. He believes that his most important work has been the development of quantitative neurophysiological techniques to anticipate spontaneous recovery after nerve injuries, so that those patients who will recover on their own do not undergo unnecessary surgery.

Dr. Brown's excellence in neurological surgery has been recognized by Boston Magazine, which named him among the best neurological surgery doctors in Boston each year from 2021 to 2025. He attributes his storied success to his passion for the field and the guidance he received from mentors like Dr. Dimitrijevic, Dr. Susan Mackinnon and Dr. Julia Terzis. He currently receives both national and international fellows regularly. He has published the blueprint for this new direction in neurosurgery, "Establishing Reconstructive Neurosurgery as a Subspecialty" in the Journal of Neurosurgery in 2017 and aspires to support the establishment of paralysis centers at major medical facilities around the world, building on the foundation he has already laid with individuals he has trained.

In his personal life, Dr. Brown is a devoted husband to psychiatrist Dr. Karen Brown and father to three boys. They are involved in their church and enjoy supporting the boys' sports activities, particularly wrestling, which allows him to bond with them outside of his demanding career. Through his dedication to advancing neurosurgical techniques and improving patient outcomes, he continues to make significant contributions to health care while balancing a fulfilling life centered around his family.
