Dr. Slater, a retired psychiatrist, dedicated 45 years to the field of psychiatry, achieving a level of expertise that has become widely recognized and respected. Her career began with her service as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 1980, where she honed her general medical skills and developed a solid foundation of leadership. Following her military service, Dr. Slater completed a psychiatry residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Science (UAMS) and then embarked on a distinguished career in psychiatry, contributing significantly to various institutions and initiatives.

Having enjoyed a notable tenure at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Dr. Slater served veterans for nearly three decades. During this time, she was pivotal in developing community-based outpatient clinics, developing the addictions fellowship and expanding cognitive behavioral therapy initiatives for sleep management. Dr. Slater was also associated with the Little Rock Community Mental Health Clinic, where she made impactful contributions to mental health care between 2014 and 2019. Her dedication to improving lives through her professional efforts was evident in her work at this clinic. Dr. Slater's final clinical assignment was with Mid-South Health Systems in Forest City, Arkansas.

Dr. Slater's academic achievements are extensive. She earned a Doctor of Medicine from UAMS in 1977, completed a residency in general psychiatry in 1982, and obtained board certification in adult psychiatry in 1985 with added qualifications in addictions in 1994. She attained the academic rank of associate professor of psychiatry at UAMS, where she directed psychiatry and medical student education at the VA training site.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Slater is actively involved in civic associations and community projects. She has been a member of The Links Incorporated for 25 years and served as the organization's Little Rock (AR) Chapter president for four years. Her leadership in this organization has focused on education, screening, prevention and management of chronic kidney disease. With the knowledge that Arkansas ranks No. 1 in food insecurity, the chapter secures grants to assist communities in developing community gardens. In addition to health and wellness initiatives, the chapter mentors middle school girls and provides scholarships to young women who are graduating high school.

In recognition of her work, the UAMS Department of Psychiatry recognized Dr. Slater with the prestigious Robert Woods Shannon Award, highlighting her commitment to innovation and education in Arkansas. She attributes her success to a simple yet effective philosophy that includes approaching each day with the intention of completing assigned tasks.

Looking ahead, Dr. Slater envisions achieving goals related to the organizations in which she participates rather than those connected to medicine. One of her aspirations is to document the rich history of the Little Rock (AR) Chapter of The Links, paying tribute to the 25 women who founded it in 1956, one year before the Central High crisis. Dr. Slater is determined to honor this heritage by writing a history book preserving its remarkable story for future generations.
