Dr. Fields has worked in the field of mental health and substance use for over thirty years, with a focus on suicide prevention, support for male survivors of sexual abuse, and various aspects of recovery. He currently serves as a trainer and outreach coordinator at the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network, an organization that is led and run by consumers/peers. His role involves promoting mental health recovery and wellness through advocacy, education, employment, and peer support. Dr. Fields' experience demonstrates that a mental health condition does not have to limit one's goals or aspirations.
Significant contributions across various roles mark Dr. Fields' career journey from being a representative of Georgia to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) National Peer Leadership Council (PLC) and engaged in suicide postvention efforts with NAMI from 2022 to the present. Since 2006, he has been a field care consultant at the Behavioral Health Link Crisis Intervention Service for Mental Health, Substance Use, and Developmental Disabilities. Later, he was promoted and served as a community liaison from 2022 to 2025. Additionally, he has been a Certified Peer Specialist for Addictive Disease through the Georgia Council for Recovery since 2022.
His extensive experience includes a long tenure at View Point Health from 1993 to 2023, where he held multiple roles, such as mental health associate and high utilization management navigator until 2022. During his time there, Dr. Fields actively participated in the Assertive Community Treatment Team and provided intensive case management services. His work in day treatment and community support services further highlights his dedication to assisting individuals facing mental health challenges.
Dr. Fields' educational background includes an Associate of Science in psychology from DeKalb Community College, completed in 1997. His academic achievements have been instrumental in his professional success, providing him with a strong foundation in understanding psychological principles and applying them in various roles throughout his career.
In addition to his degree, Dr. Fields holds numerous certifications that enhance his expertise. These include being a Certified Anger Management Specialist, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Board-Certified Christian Counselor, and Certified Christian Life Coach. His commitment to continuous learning is evident through his certifications in public health and various specialized training programs.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Fields is actively involved in civic organizations and is a minister, dedicating his time to supporting individuals within his church community. He has received several awards recognizing his contributions, including an Honorary Doctorate in Christian leadership from the School of the Great Commission Theological Seminary in 2024 and the Executive Director Award for his work in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Throughout his life, Dr. Fields has faced numerous challenges, including molestation at a young age, bullying, harassment, racism, and dismissal from college. Despite these obstacles, he persevered and earned his degree, becoming an accomplished international speaker, author, and film star on mental health matters. He has worked hard to develop himself and add value to others.
Dr. Fields attributes his success to his mother, who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and taught him that "You are not your diagnosis." She exemplified this belief as a nurse practitioner and a Black woman at the Veterans Administration in Decatur, Georgia, where she assisted individuals with mental health conditions and more. He also acknowledges his father, a hardworking social worker who turned his life around to help his community. Dr. Fields is grateful for his faith, which has supported him throughout his journey, and subscribes to this advice: "Stop looking at what you do not have and start using what you do have" to live a fulfilling and meaningful life.
In his personal life, Dr. Fields enjoys weight training, reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. He also finds joy in watching cooking and wrestling shows. Looking ahead, he aspires to open his counseling center named "Heal the Brokenhearted," focusing on the impact of traumatic experiences, 8 Dimensions of wellness, and anger management. Through this endeavor, he aims to provide counseling and support to individuals while ensuring the success of his practice and attracting funding to support his mission.
