Dr. Mayes' activism was ignited by witnessing discrimination firsthand, leading him to organize protests and become a founding member of the Aurora Key Community Response Team. His efforts extended to child abuse prevention through the establishment of Everyone Sharing Child Abuse Prevention Education (ESCAPE) in 1990. As an ordained elder with the Church of God in Christ, he continues to advocate for social justice and community well-being.

Active as a writer, Dr. Mayes has authored "The Brilliance of Ignorance," published by Outskirts Press in 2013, which encapsulates his philosophy that acknowledging one's limitations can be a powerful catalyst for growth. This work earned him the International Impact Award, highlighting his influence beyond local communities.

Dr. Mayes' accolades include being named Man of the Year by the City of Aurora in 2007, reflecting his significant contributions to civic life.
