UNION, MO, June 02, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert Eric Miller has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Miller is a distinguished expert in rhinoceros medicine, particularly black rhinos, and has made significant contributions to the field of zoo veterinary medicine. As the director emeritus of the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute, he has overseen the establishment of the conservation department and managed various conservation projects. Dr. Miller continues to provide occasional advice and support to the current director and staff.

Dr. Miller began his career at the Saint Louis Zoo as a resident veterinarian, where he developed hands-on expertise in animal care and treatment. His deepening experience and leadership led to successive promotions — first to associate veterinarian, then senior veterinarian and later head veterinarian. Ultimately, Dr. Miller rose to the role of senior vice president, a position he held before transitioning to his current role as director emeritus.

In addition to his professional roles, Dr. Miller served as the president of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians and maintains lifetime membership with the European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians. His dedication to international collaboration is reflected in his efforts to unite European and American zoo veterinarians, resulting in shared journals and joint meetings. Dr. Miller is also working toward including veterinarians from Latin America and Japan to create a large international organization, emphasizing the importance of unity among zookeepers.

Dr. Miller has made significant contributions to research on hemolytic anemia in black rhinos. Collaborating with prestigious institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and UCLA, he discovered a significant prevalence of this condition affecting 25% of the studied population. Although definitive conclusions have yet to be reached, Dr. Miller's comprehensive studies have investigated potential causes of the disease.

A strong academic foundation shaped Dr. Miller's path in zoo medicine. He earned a Bachelor of Science in zoology, summa cum laude, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, cum laude, from The Ohio State University. His education prepared him to thrive in a range of veterinary roles, ultimately leading to a distinguished career at the Saint Louis Zoo. Dr. Miller credits his parents' steadfast support and encouragement as key influences in his professional journey.

A civic-minded individual, Dr. Miller serves as chair of the board for the Harris World Ecology Center at the University of Missouri St. Louis and is a board member of the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis. His accolades include being named Ohio State Alumni of the Year, receiving the Murray Fowler Award, and the Emil Dolensek Award. He has lifetime membership in the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. As an editor of "Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine" and author of 60 scientific publications, Dr. Miller has significantly contributed to advancing knowledge in his field.

Outside his career, Dr. Miller enjoys gardening as a personal pastime. He envisions a future where zoos continue to support conservation efforts by connecting with local audiences to make a difference for wildlife. Inspired by a former director's words that "nobody goes to the World Wildlife Fund to see animals," Dr. Miller aims to inspire people to care about wildlife and conservation, especially given current governmental challenges regarding conservation issues.
