He received the James Joyce Award for Excellence in Law from the University of Dublin in 2014 and the Senator William Fulbright Award for Global Leadership in International Law in 2012. He was named one of the best lawyers in New York by New York Magazine and among the top 10 litigators by the National Law Journal. Mr. Garbus earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Hunter College in 1955 before pursuing a Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law in 1959. Later, he obtained a Master of Business Administration from Columbia University. Admitted to the New York Bar in 1960, he gained further credentials with admissions to the United States Supreme Court in 1962 and various U.S. Courts of Appeals by 1970. Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Garbus has been actively involved with civic-minded organizations such as Greenpeace through pro bono cases and served on advisory boards, including Harvard Medical School's Advisory Board and the Mayor's Select Committee on Criminal Justice.
Drawing from his wealth of experience and knowledge, Mr. Garbus has authored several books, including "The Next 25 Years: The New Supreme Court and What it Means for Americans," published in 2007, and "Courting Disaster: The Supreme Court and the Unmaking of America Law," released in 2002. Born in Brooklyn, he is a lifelong New Yorker and a devoted father to his daughters, Cassandra and Elizabeth. In his personal life, he enjoys reading and writing.
