Dr. Berry's career is marked by a series of impactful roles. Prior to his current position, he was the chief scientific officer at Aspira Women's Health from 2023 to 2024, where he focused on using artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify patterns in human protein expression for diagnosing diseases like ovarian cancer and endometriosis. From 2021 to 2023, he served as the chief scientific officer at OraSure Technologies, where he played a pivotal role in developing InteliSwab®, a COVID-19 rapid test that received FDA approval and was widely used in U.S. schools. Dr. Berry's innovative idea to integrate a swab into the device led to significant government funding and commercial success.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Berry held various leadership positions that honed his expertise in infectious disease diagnostics. At Grifols, he designed new assays for HIV and HPV, contributing to numerous publications between 2015 and 2018. Prior to that, his work at Pharmingen from 2011 to 2014 further enhanced his skills in antibody discovery. From 2008 to 2011, during his tenure at Cangene Corporation, Dr. Berry established a research department focused on cloning therapeutic antibodies for biothreats like Ebola and Marburg viruses and C. difficile toxin.

Dr. Berry's academic journey laid a strong foundation for his illustrious career. He earned his Bachelor of Science in honors microbiology from the University of Manitoba in 1992 and completed his PhD in medical microbiology in the department of medicine in 1998. His postdoctoral fellowship at The Scripps Research Institute under Dr. Carlos Barbas III allowed him to conduct groundbreaking research on HIV-resistant individuals, leading to significant advancements in antibody cloning techniques.

In times of global crisis, Dr. Berry has repeatedly stepped forward as a key scientific leader. During and after 9/11, he played an instrumental role in Canada's national biodefense response, working with specialized cross-functional teams to assess potential biothreats, including analyzing the powder from the Twin Towers for anthrax spores. His immunology expertise was critical in re-establishing Canada's independent reagent and assay capabilities when the U.S. prioritized domestic access, showcasing his ability to mobilize science in service of national and international security.

In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Berry is actively involved in civic organizations and mentoring initiatives. He coaches minor league hockey and works with the University of Arkansas for their National Science Foundation mentoring program. His contributions have been recognized with awards such as the Spirit of Innovation Award for InteliSwab® and the Government of Canada Public Service Commendation Award for his post-9/11 efforts.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Berry enjoys spending time with his family and engaging in activities such as hockey, walking and going to the gym. As a devoted grandfather, he hopes to continue making meaningful contributions through his work while also cherishing time with his family. His favorite memories are in the backyard skating rinks he would build in Winnipeg with his daughters. Dr. Berry's journey serves as a reminder that with determination, anyone can achieve their goals.
