Mr. Buchner, a retired mechanical engineer in aerospace, has had a distinguished career marked by significant contributions to the field. His career began at McDonnell Douglas in 1986, where he joined the flight test engineering program for the C17 aircraft. This role allowed him to contribute to developing one of the Air Force's most effective transportation aircraft, which is now used globally. In 1999, when Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas, Mr. Buchner continued his work and eventually became the acting director of engineering until his retirement in 2012. Subsequently, he was contacted by the company with an offer to return as a consultant, which he accepted, and he has been freelancing for Boeing for over a decade.
Mr. Buchner's military service during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969 played a pivotal role in shaping his professional journey. Upon returning from service, he utilized opportunities provided by Veterans Affairs to further his education and establish a successful career. Mr. Buchner graduated with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1973.
Throughout his career, Mr. Buchner has been actively involved in civic organizations, such as the Phoenix Club, the American Legion and the Southern California Golf Association. These affiliations have allowed him to stay connected with peers following his retirement. Additionally, Mr. Buchner has been involved with U.S. Youth Soccer since 1979 as a player, coach, referee and tournament director. His commitment to youth sports reflects his dedication to fostering community engagement and supporting young athletes. Furthermore, he volunteers with heart organizations and veterans organizations, demonstrating his commitment to giving back to society.
Mr. Buchner's journey from military service to a successful career in aerospace engineering exemplifies resilience and dedication. His passion for aviation and aircraft systems has been a driving force behind his success and ongoing engagement in the industry.
He would like to credit three people who were instrumental in his career: Dick Clegg, who saw the spark in him, Art Belas, who gave Mr. Buchner the reins so he could do what he needed to do, and Matt Borland who saw the vision that carried Mr. Buchner to my greatest achievements.
