Prior to her current position, Dr. Jones served as vice president of research at Michael Smith Health Research BC from 2020 to 2022. In this capacity, she directed strategic initiatives that advanced new research discoveries, and the development of new technologies, diagnostics and therapeutics to improve the health and wellbeing of people and communities. Her efforts were pivotal in supporting scientists in the translation of their research findings into clinical applications and public health policy that aimed to save lives.
Dr. Jones's career also includes significant contributions during her tenure at the Wellcome Trust in London, England. From 2012 to 2020, she held various roles and was promoted to director of insight and analysis and a member of Wellcome's executive leadership team. Her work involved evaluating the effectiveness of global research initiatives to assess the impact of investments in health-related research.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Jones served as a program manager at the Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 2008 to 2012. There, she managed a collaborative interdisciplinary research program that involved scientists from around the world working together to tackle complex problems in biomedical research.
Dr. Jones's educational journey began with a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from The Ohio State University in 1993. Later, she earned her Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry, cell and developmental biology at Emory University School of Medicine in 2005. In support of her doctoral research, she received multiple awards including the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Deafness and Communication Disorders by the National Institutes of Health.
In addition to her academic training, she taught cell biology and genetics as an instructor at The University of Georgia, Emory University and Morehouse College.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Jones is actively involved with several civic-minded organizations committed to advancing science. She serves on various advisory boards in science and technology, including the Digital Science Advisory Board, the Frontiers Group Science Advisory Council at the Allen Institute, the Open Science Advisory Board at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and as a board director for CIFAR, among many other similar positions.
Dr. Jones's dedication extends to mentoring rising talent, which she considers her proudest accomplishment. Coming from a humble upbringing without access to leadership development opportunities, she strives to be a role model for leaders of the next generation by coaching them and nurturing their potential.
Reflecting on her career, Dr. Jones attributes her success to her faith and values instilled in her by her family, emphasizing hard work, authenticity, transparency and trust. She is also grateful for the mentors and sponsors who have guided her and is now committed to giving back by supporting others. Born in South Korea and naturalized as a US citizen at a year old, she is also proud to be a first-generation college and doctoral graduate.
