He was an active member of Lions Club International for 35 years until its dissolution in 2024, during which he received the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Additionally, he has been involved with the Moose Club in Powhatan, Virginia, and held various leadership roles at the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for nearly six decades.

In his personal life, Mr. McVey takes great pride in raising two accomplished daughters who have pursued careers in health care and education, fields he considers vital to society's well-being. His youngest daughter is a doctor of physical therapy, while his oldest daughter holds a master's degree in education from the University of Virginia.
