PHILADELPHIA, PA, June 10, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Karl B. Burkart has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Burkart has carved a distinguished career in environmental advocacy and sustainable development research, marked by his role as the co-founder and deputy director of One Earth. Since 2020, he has been at the helm of the organization's science and technology initiative, spearheading advanced research and technology applications to address climate change and biodiversity loss. His work focuses on three pivotal areas: renewable energy transition, nature conservation and regenerative agriculture. Under his leadership, One Earth has developed the Global Safety Net, a scientific tool recognized by Fast Company as a World Changing Idea, closely linked to the 30x30 target.
Before establishing One Earth, Mr. Burkart served as the director of innovation, media and technology at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation from 2015 to 2019. In this capacity, he managed both science and media initiatives. His responsibilities included programming content across Leonardo DiCaprio's social media channels, which reached an audience of 80 million followers dedicated to environmental causes. This role allowed him to leverage his expertise in media to amplify environmental messages on a global scale.
From 2010 until 2014, Mr. Burkart was the digital director at the Global Call for Climate Action. In this position, he led media, science and communications operations for a coalition of 400+ organizations focused on climate change policy under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. His work involved uniting various environmental groups around shared goals and strategies.
Prior to this role, Mr. Burkart worked in media as a writer for Mother Nature Network between 2008 and 2012. During this time, he became known for his influential blog GreenDig, which was one of the world's top environmental blogs during its peak. He also developed and sold online environmental news show for Planet Green, reaching about 10 million people annually, later acquired by Discovery Network.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Burkart held several positions in digital media and architecture. He was the chief executive officer of K2B Global from 2007 to 2010 and the director of UI and UX at FanRocket from 2007 until 2008. He also served as the director of UX and content development at EVO.com between 2005 and 2007. His architectural background includes working as a project architect at Ratcliff Architects from 1997 to 2002.
Laying the foundation for Mr. Burkart's accomplishments in environmental advocacy were his academic achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College in 1988, followed by a Master of Architecture in built and environmental systems design from the University of Oregon in 1993. He is also a LEED professional certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, underscoring his commitment to sustainable building practices.
Reflecting on his career, Mr. Burkart attributes much of his success to his mother, Deborah, who encouraged his unconventional pursuits and supported his desire to make a meaningful impact. Her support gave him the confidence to follow his passion for environmental work — something he believes he would not be doing today without her encouragement. He also credits his unshakable tenacity and deeply rooted sense of purpose— a consistent determination that has been central to his career.
In addition to his professional triumphs, Mr. Burkart is passionate about wildlife conservation and gardening and is a member of the Ecological Landscape Alliance. He regularly plants milkweed and other pollinator plants to support butterfly populations and contributes to ecological landscaping efforts. Looking ahead, he envisions One Earth as a leading force in building a nonpartisan community around nature conservation and is preparing to publish a book on bioregions to further public understanding of local ecosystems.
