CAROLINA BEACH, NC, June 13, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Douglas V. Nance, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Nance, a distinguished research scientist, has made substantial contributions to the fields of computational physics and engineering over a 34-year career. He began his professional journey in 1983 when he joined the U.S. Navy's nuclear power program, completing rigorous training and serving as a nuclear submarine officer aboard the now-decommissioned USS Finback (SSN-670). During his six-year naval career, he held key roles, including damage control assistant and electrical officer. Dr. Nance was instrumental in solving a complex mathematical navigation issue that benefited passengers outside his crew, a highlight that reflected his early aptitude for problem-solving and analytical thinking.

Prior to being commissioned as a US Naval Officer in 1984, Dr. Nance earned both a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in physics, summa cum laude, from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He went on to complete a Master of Science in applied mathematics from the same institution in 1991, where he conducted thesis research under Professor Thaddeus Dankel on stochastic modeling of underwater acoustics. Dr. Nance's growing interest in computational physics led to a prestigious selection for the Air Force's Palace Knight civilian employment program.

In 1991, Dr. Nance began his federal civilian career at Eglin Air Force Base through the Palace Knight program, initially working on computational fluid dynamics. He was then fully sponsored to pursue doctoral studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned his PhD in aerospace engineering in 1997 under the mentorship of Regents' Professor Dr. Lakshmi Sankar. Dr. Nance's dissertation focused on finite volume schemes optimized for low numerical dispersion and their applications in computational aeroacoustics.

Upon returning to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Dr. Nance advanced through roles of increasing responsibility. From 1997 to 2002, he served as a research scientist, where he developed numerous computational tools, including DASP, a dynamic analysis toolkit for assessing structural response in weapons programs. In 2002, he was promoted to lead scientist, a position he held until his retirement in 2017. During this time, Dr. Nance led a team within AFRL's Munitions Directorate, directing research on multiphase physics, detonation dynamics, thermodynamics, electromagnetic wave propagation and systems engineering.

Dr. Nance's achievements have been recognized with several honors, including the U.S. Air Force Exemplary Civilian Service Award in 2011 and the U.S. Navy Achievement Medal in 1989. Additionally, over his career, he authored numerous technical reports and peer-reviewed publications in prominent journals such as Shock Waves and the AIAA Journal. Notably, Dr. Nance developed innovative simulation algorithms for explosive detonation physics and nuclear reactor kinetics.

Since retiring as a research scientist in 2017, Dr. Nance has remained active in consulting and independent research. He has provided professional consulting services to Montana Technological University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington while also conducting independent research projects. Moreover, Dr. Nance has explored his creative side as an illustrator and author of children's books, independently publishing three titles: "Aubrey's Island Adventure," "Bentley and the Deep Sea Search" and "Karleigh and the Pirate Chest."

In his personal life, Dr. Nance enjoys physical exercise and amateur astronomy. Looking ahead, he is considering teaching at the collegiate level and hopes to continue his research and consulting endeavors. He is currently developing foundational courses in statics, dynamics, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics for potential teaching opportunities at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Driven by a lifelong passion for science and education, Dr. Nance remains committed to advancing knowledge through both research and mentorship.
