Ms. Liao has established herself as a distinguished figure in the arts with a career that spans various continents and disciplines. Currently, she serves as the president of Diary of the Dragon's Daughter (Films) LLC, a role she has held since 2020. Through this platform, Ms. Liao has produced the award-winning documentary "An Artist's Journey from China to America," which received over 60 national and international awards and selections in 2021, underscoring her talent for storytelling through visual media.
In addition to her role as president, Ms. Liao has also been an educational consultant at Guanmei International School in Dongguang, China, since 2010, where she promotes international cultural integration in arts education. From 2008 to 2016, she was a professor at the Paducah School of Art & Design at West Kentucky Community and Technical College, where she was recognized for her innovative blended art instruction that incorporated global cultural awareness. Ms. Liao's academic career also includes roles as an adjunct instructor and graduate teaching assistant at Kendall College of Art and Design from 2007 to 2008 and as an adjunct instructor at Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University between 2001 and 2006.
Before immigrating to the United States in 1999 under the Alien of Extraordinary Ability visa, Ms. Liao held numerous influential roles in China. She served as the director of the Painting and Photography Department in Longgang and Baoan, executive editor of the Longgang Newspaper and vice chairwoman of the Literature, Art and Culture Association in Longgang. Ms. Liao was also president of the Photography Association in Longgang, Shenzhen, where she organized national and international exhibitions, including a Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique competition.
Ms. Liao's artistic journey began at the age of 16 when she first picked up a paintbrush. Her dedication to her craft is evident in her use of oil and acrylic paints to depict her life experiences in both China and America. Her paintings serve as a poignant reminder of historical events related to war, aiming to educate viewers on the importance of not repeating past mistakes. In addition to her visual art, Ms. Liao authored "Diary of the Dragon's Daughter: Painting as a Window into Chinese History" in 2016, emphasizing the power of art as a medium for historical reflection and healing.
Ms. Liao earned a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 2008, following a Master of Arts in painting from the University of Indianapolis in Indiana in 2006. She also holds a Bachelor of Graphic Design from Hunan Province Art and Craft College in China, completed in 1986. Ms. Liao's certifications include a graduate-level certificate in photography research from the Chinese People's University, obtained in 1993, and a certificate in photography from Photography Correspondence College, completed in 1987.
Known for her commitment to art education and cultural exchange, Ms. Liao is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the International Art Education Association and Foundations in Art: Theory & Education. She previously held memberships in the Portrait Society of America and the College Art Association. In recognition of her contributions, Ms. Liao was listed in Who's Who in China in 1998.
In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. Liao is actively involved in civic organizations. Notably, she founded the Asian American Artists Society in 2024 and currently serves as its president. Previously, she was chairwoman of the art committee for the World Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta, Georgia, from 2017 to 2018. Ms. Liao's formal accolades include receiving the President's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022 and being named an Outstanding Georgia Citizen and Goodwill Ambassador in 2021, among many others.
Beyond her career, Ms. Liao enjoys painting and playing the piano. She is dedicated to continuing her artistic endeavors with plans to donate her artworks to educate communities about cultural history through art.
