EDISON, NJ, June 16, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Lathan Arasaratnam, PhD, PEng, PE, PMP, MASCE, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Arasaratnam is a distinguished leader in structural and bridge engineering, widely recognized for his expertise in long-span bridge design and seismic resilience of structures. With over two decades of experience, he has made transformative contributions to the field, most notably through his pioneering research on deep and steel girder behavior. His work directly influenced updates to the Canadian steel design code, particularly Clause 14.1, which governs the design of steel girders and beams with bolted flange connections. This milestone reflects Dr. Arasaratnam's exceptional technical acumen and innovative problem-solving in tackling some of the most complex challenges in modern bridge engineering.
Currently serving as the lead bridge engineer and design manager at TYLin, Dr. Arasaratnam oversees multidisciplinary teams in the design, evaluation and rehabilitation of critical infrastructure across North America. His role involves managing complex projects such as the $2.4 billion Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension Replacement in New Jersey, where he applies advanced seismic and structural design principles. Prior to joining TYLin, he held senior leadership positions at several prominent engineering firms, including STV, Associated Engineering, Parsons Corporation, Jacobs, WorleyParsons, and WSP in Canada.
Dr. Arasaratnam began his professional journey with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Peradeniya, graduating with First Class Honours in 2000. He went on to pursue graduate studies at McMaster University, where he earned a Master of Applied Science in 2004 and a Ph.D. in 2008, both in Bridge and Structural Engineering. His doctoral research made a significant impact on the development of national codes and standards governing the behavior of steel under bolted connections.
Beyond his formal degrees, Dr. Arasaratnam is a licensed professional engineer in both the United States and Canada and holds a Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute Inc. He is also a member of various esteemed organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers. Dr. Arasaratnam's commitment to advancing the field is evident through his authorship of over 25 publications and frequent participation as a speaker at leading engineering conferences and seminars.
In recognition of his academic excellence and research contributions, Dr. Arasaratnam has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Prof. Ahmed Ghobarah Scholarship for Academic Excellence in Structural Engineering and multiple full Research and Graduate Scholarships from McMaster University. He was also awarded the Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship by the Government of Sri Lanka, reflecting his sustained dedication to academic achievement and innovation in engineering.
Driven by an awareness of life's fleeting nature, Dr. Arasaratnam is deeply committed to community service and mentorship. He actively promotes STEM education and youth development, particularly by inspiring students from underrepresented communities to pursue careers in civil and structural engineering. On a global scale, he has contributed to charitable engineering initiatives focused on enhancing infrastructure and education in underserved regions.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. Arasaratnam enjoys basketball, baking, reading, and writing, and he remains deeply engaged with technical literature to advance his understanding of engineering innovation and infrastructure resilience. Looking ahead, he is committed to strengthening communities through sustainable infrastructure that emphasizes resilience, performance, and environmental responsibility. Guided by the belief that one's achievements should serve a greater purpose, Dr. Arasaratnam strives to leave a lasting legacy - one that future generations can both appreciate and build upon.
