His teaching repertoire includes courses on Shakespeare's "Hamlet," film noir and the history of screenwriting. Prior to his tenure at UC Riverside, he served as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, for six years.
In addition to his academic roles, Mr. Russin is an accomplished screenwriter and director. He has been self-employed in these capacities since 1992, contributing significantly to the entertainment industry. His directorial works include "The Anxiety of Laughing" in 2021 and "When I Sing" in 2018. He further lends his expertise in screenwriting and directing through his involvement with the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival as a respondent, play director and chair of the National Playwriting Program Region 8 since 2005.
Instrumental in shaping Mr. Russin's multifaceted career was his academic background, which began with a Bachelor of Arts in fine arts, film and theater from Harvard University in 1979, graduating with magna cum laude distinction and the department's highest honors. He subsequently earned a master's degree in English language and literature from the University of Oxford in 1981, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1983. His education culminated in a Master of Fine Arts in screenwriting from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1991.
Also noteworthy are Mr. Russin's contributions to developing coursework, which include co-authoring "Naked Playwriting: The Art, the Craft, and the Life Laid Bare," published by Silman-James in 2005 with a revised edition in 2023, and "Screenplay: Writing the Picture" in 2012. These works reflect his deep understanding of storytelling and his commitment to educating aspiring writers.
Throughout his career, Mr. Russin has received numerous accolades such as Best Director twice at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival and an Excellence in Education Award from the same institution. He has also earned recognition for his screenwriting and independent films at various festivals.
Beyond academia and film, Mr. Russin's dedication extends into civic engagement. He donates $30,000 annually to various charities, including environmental groups, liberal political action groups, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and UNICEF. His philanthropic efforts are complemented by his role as the class secretary for the Rhodes Scholarship.
Looking ahead, Mr. Russin aims to complete a documentary series that holds significant importance to him while continuing to write screenplays and direct films. Additionally, he plans to finish a memoir written from the perspective of Hercules and hopes to return to exhibiting his artwork.
