Prior to making a mark at UMG, Mr. Nash played key roles at Warner Music Group (WMG). From 2000 to 2008 he served as senior vice president of digital strategy and business development, and then from 2008 to 2011 he led WMG's global digital business as executive vice president, continuing to consult on strategic matters through 2015. Mr. Nash's professional journey into the music business began with his oversight of the Madison Project, the industry's first digital distribution trial, from 1999 to 2000.
Coupled with his expertise in engineering digital business partnerships—which has been pivotal in introducing new products, distribution structures and execution practices with major platforms—Mr. Nash's leadership has been crucial during the digital disruption of the music industry. During this time, he has focused on business model innovation, including groundbreaking constructs to enable establishment and evolution of subscription and streaming services, significantly contributing to the industry's recovery and growth. Career highlights include important agreements, often first of their kind, with companies such as Amazon, Apple, Meta, Spotify, Tencent, YouTube and many others.
Mr. Nash's role in shaping digital strategies and business development initiatives has been recognized with various awards and distinctions, including being named to every Billboard Power 100 list over the past decade.
Mr. Nash has an art world background, and during the early years of his career, he organized numerous exhibitions at leading cultural institutions and authored over one hundred publications on art and media. He leveraged his proficiency in criticism and curation—including serving as media arts curator at Long Beach Museum of Art from 1989 to 1991—into a leadership position with the Voyager Company. As director of Voyager's famed Criterion Collection from 1991 to 1994, he oversaw production of definitive editions of some of cinema's most important classic and contemporary films. His work at Voyager also encompassed pioneering new digital formats, which led to his founding of Inscape in 1994, where he served as chief executive officer until 1997. At Inscape, Mr. Nash developed computer games based on "story worlds" of recording artists, securing backing from WMG and HBO, and garnering numerous product awards and industry recognitions. Assessing this decade of accomplishments, The Atlantic labeled Mr. Nash a "visionary" and Entertainment Weekly named him one of multimedia's ten "most influential, forward-thinking" figures.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Nash has worked on creative and strategic projects with a diverse array of prominent artists, musicians and directors including Robert Altman, David Bowie, Gerald Casale, Thomas Dolby, Terry Gilliam, the Hughes Brothers, David Lynch, Louis Malle, the Residents, Nicolas Roeg, John Singleton, Björn Ulvaeus, Bill Viola, Neil Young and many others.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Nash is an active member of the Triple Nine Society and Mensa International. He was also recognized during his college years at the University of Utah as a tournament-winning academic debater, twice reaching the prestigious National Debate Tournament quarterfinals and ranked among the nation's top ten collegiate debaters.
