Dr. Rucker's illustrious career in the aerospace industry spanned more than 40 years, culminating in his retirement in 2022. His journey began at General Dynamics, where he served as a test engineer from 1980 to 1984, focusing on the Phalanx Weapon System and Standard Missile 1. He then transitioned to Northrop Grumman, contributing as a senior engineer and engineer specialist from 1984 to 1989, working on the B-2 program. His expertise further expanded during his tenure at McDonnell Douglas, where he held roles such as senior manager of reliability and maintainability engineering from 1989 to 1996 and participated in the executive development program from 1996 to 1997.
In 1997, Dr. Rucker joined Boeing, beginning a significant chapter in his career. He initially served as a customer liaison and senior manager for quality systems until 2005. His leadership skills were recognized with his appointment as senior manager and director of Phantom Works Quality, a position he held until his retirement in 2022. In his final year at Boeing, he was the director of Phantom Works Quality, overseeing the innovative and creative side of advanced aerospace technology.
Dr. Rucker's academic background laid a strong foundation for his professional achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering technology from California State Polytechnic University-Pomona in 1983. His pursuit of knowledge continued with an Executive Master of Business Administration from Claremont Graduate University in 1996. In recognition of his contributions to science and technology, California State Polytechnic University-Pomona awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in 2023.
As a professional, Dr. Rucker joined and has been a member of The Sigma Pi Phi Professional Fraternity, holding various leadership roles such as chief communications officer and chief publications officer. His commitment to education is evident through his involvement with the Claremont Graduate School Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering Dean's Leadership Board. As vice president of the Black Alumni and Friends Chapter of the CPP Alumni Association, he has continued to foster connections within the community.
Dr. Rucker's dedication to mentoring has been a defining aspect of his life. Inspired by his father's legacy, and the teachings of his former professor, Peter F. Drucker, he began mentoring students two decades ago, guiding them toward successful careers in engineering and other fields. His efforts have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Dean's Distinguished Leadership Award from Cal Poly Pomona's College of Business Administration in 2025, the Joseph R. Biden Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, and induction into the Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering Hall of Fame in 2019.
Dr. Rucker credits his success to maintaining a positive outlook. He believes that regardless of whom he is speaking with—whether it is a student, an associate, or a leader from his days in aerospace engineering—it is important to keep a positive perspective focusing on win/win solutions. Many years ago, he learned a valuable lesson from his father: focusing on negative aspects can corrupt one's heart. By looking at things from a positive perspective, with optimism, and treating people with kindness while guiding and motivating them, these positive actions will undoubtedly return to you tenfold.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Rucker is passionate about personal growth and community service. He enjoys playing the drums, driving his sports cars and maintaining an active lifestyle by working out regularly. His future aspirations include making a lasting impact on educational institutions through endowments and exploring international opportunities to connect with diverse communities worldwide.
