He served as a software architect at Gartner from 2000 to 2015, and as a customer service solution delivery manager at Amazon from 1999 to 2000. He began his career as an oil field exploration engineer at Schlumberger, working in France and Angola, from 1982 to 1983, after which his tenure at British Telecommunications (BT) from 1996 to 1999 marked a significant accomplishment. As an optical fiber networks optimization lead, Dr. Asumu developed the world's first system for telecommunication planning using genetic algorithms. This system was notable for significantly reducing the planning time for creating telecommunications optical networks from approximately six days to about 20 minutes, demonstrating a remarkable enhancement in efficiency. Based on this work, BT established a small spin-off company to develop the system further.

Dr. Asumu's academic journey laid a strong foundation for his professional achievements. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in artificial intelligence and natural language processing from The University of Manchester in 1989, following a master's degree in microprocessor engineering and digital electronics from the same institution in 1986. He furthered his expertise as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Manchester Metropolitan University from 1989 to 1995. Additionally, Dr. Asumu became a Sun-Certified Enterprise Architect in 2002.

Dr. Asumu's contributions extend beyond his professional endeavors into civic duties and philanthropy. He has generously donated to causes across Africa, focusing on providing water wells to communities in need. His volunteer work includes mentoring young engineers and high school students in software technology, highlighting his commitment to educational mentorship and community development.

Throughout his career, Dr. Asumu has received numerous accolades for his technical leadership and innovation, including Gartner's Extraordinary Effort Award for Technical Leadership in 2003 and BT Laboratories' Outstanding Value and Delivery Excellence Award in 1999. He received the Creating Tomorrow's Engineers award from the United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry in 1999 and was a British Telecom Gold Medal Finalist for his work in fiber telecommunication networks in 1998. British Telecom also honored him with their Network Planning Plant and Pilots Achievers award in 1997. Dr. Asumu's extensive publications and patents further reflect his expertise.

His persistence allows him to move toward solutions, even when progress appears unattainable.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Asumu enjoys spending time with his family, which includes his wife Christine, three children and a grandson. He finds solace in nature and enjoys taking long walks and is a keen amateur mathematician.
