Ms. Whelan is an established leader in the realm of sustainable business, currently serving as the founding director of the New York University Stern Center for Sustainable Business since 2015.

In this role, she is also a distinguished professor of practice for business and society at the New York University Stern School of Business. Prior to her current position, Ms. Whelan served as president of the Rainforest Alliance from 2000 to 2015. During her tenure, she was instrumental in expanding the organization's reach and impact, fostering collaborations with businesses to promote sustainable practices. Before that, she was president of Whelan Associates from 1997 to 2000, where she honed her skills in strategic consulting for environmental organizations. Her earlier career included serving as executive director of the New York League of Conservation Voters from 1992 to 1997 and vice president of the National Audubon Society from 1989 to 1992.

Ms. Whelan's influence extends beyond her professional roles through her involvement with various industry-related organizations. She has been an advisory board member for Workiva since 2023 and serves on the climate advisory board at Edelman and the advisory board at Glenmede. Her commitment to sustainability is further reflected in her roles as an advisory board member for Nestlé Nespresso SA since 2012 and the Unilever Sustainable Sourcing Advisory Board from 2005 to 2015.

Her academic background laid a strong foundation for her career achievements. Ms. Whelan earned an OPM Certificate in Business Administration and Management from Harvard Business School Executive Education in 2015. She holds a Master of Arts in international communication from American University, completed in 1983, and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from New York University, obtained in 1980.

Ms. Whelan's dedication to civic-minded organizations is evident through her time spent as a board member at GlobeScan from 2017 to 2019. She has also held advisory roles that include positions with Sustainable Brands from 2012 to 2015 and Social Accountability International from 2011 to 2015. She has received several awards honoring her achievements, including Crain's New York Business' Notable Leaders in Sustainability in 2024 and the James Beard Foundation Leadership Award in 2012, among others.

Ms. Whelan attributes her success to her ability to identify opportunities for change and effectively communicate a vision that others can support. She feels that her professional journey demonstrates the power of collaboration in solving the challenge of implementing sustainable business strategies that drive better financial returns. Outside of her professional and civic endeavors, Ms. Whelan enjoys hiking, spending time in nature, writing, traveling and reading science fiction. Looking ahead, she is planning to transition from her current role at the Center for Sustainable Business to focus more on research and writing while expanding her work through corporate board memberships. Additionally, she aims to prioritize international travel and work on publishing a book in the near future.
