Prior to his current role, Mr. Masson was the head girls basketball coach at Rolling Hills Preparatory School from 2014 to 2020. His time at RHP was highlighted by winning a California State Championship and advancing to the State Championship two other years. His tenure there was preceded by a long-standing position as the head boys basketball coach at Carson High School from 1982 to 2006. During this time, he also served as the athletic director for a decade and as assistant athletic director for nine years, demonstrating his multifaceted capabilities in sports administration and coaching.
Mr. Masson's early career included significant roles such as head boys basketball coach and head baseball coach at LA Jordan High School from 1975 to 1982. He also contributed as a football defensive coordinator at Los Angeles Southwest College for one year. His foundational years were spent as an assistant coach in football, basketball and baseball at Fremont High School from 1972 to 1975, where he had the privilege of coaching future professional athletes like Ricky Bell and Chet Lemon.
In addition to his coaching roles, Mr. Masson played a pivotal part in the Los Angeles Unified School District's athletic reorganization as an athletic league commissioner from 2006 to 2012. His involvement with industry-related organizations such as the National Federation of State High School Associations and the California State Athletic Directors Association further underscores his commitment to advancing high school athletics.
Mr. Masson's educational background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He earned a Master of Arts in professional leadership and physical education from Brigham Young University in 1980, following a Bachelor of Science in physical education with minors in biology and psychology from the University of New Hampshire in 1970. These academic accomplishments have been instrumental in shaping his approach to coaching and leadership.
Throughout his career, Mr. Masson has been recognized with numerous accolades, including being named Athletic Director of the Year and receiving multiple Coach of the Year honors from various newspapers, and LA City and CIF-Southern Sections. His induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Bishop Bradley High School stands as a testament to his enduring impact on athletics. Additionally, he was honored with a Distinguished Service Award from the California Interscholastic Federation in 2012.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Mr. Masson is actively involved in civic activities such as volunteering with Meals on Wheels. He enjoys traveling and playing golf and pickleball in his leisure time. As he looks ahead, he intends to continue serving others through coaching or volunteering, inspired by the support of his family and driven by a desire to help individuals reach their full potential.
