Dr. Simonian has made significant contributions to medical laboratory sciences, particularly in her roles as dean and professor at Weber State University. Since 2008, she has overseen 12 departments within the College of Health Professions, including the School of Nursing, the School of Radiologic Sciences and the School of Health Administration Services. Her leadership has been vital in expanding the program's reach to meet as many students and families as possible, notably through the initiation of an online program designed to meet the needs of rural health communities. She takes great joy in graduating thousands of students each year and providing them with unwavering support as they prepare to enter the working world.
Prior to reaching her current role at Weber State, Dr. Simonian served as an assistant professor in medical laboratory sciences from 1981 to 2008. During this time, she also held the position of department chair for 12 years, playing a pivotal role in shaping the curriculum and guiding the department's growth. Her early career began at the University of Utah Medical Center in 1981, where she honed her expertise in hematology and blood disease studies.
Dr. Simonian's remarkable success in education and administration stems from her equally impressive background as a student, which includes a six-year journey to obtain a doctorate in health services, allied health and health sciences from the University of Utah. Her studies at the College of Pharmacy, College of Health and College of Medicine likewise provided a strong foundation for her specialization in hematology. To augment her qualifications, she is certified as a medical laboratory scientist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
As an ongoing commitment to her fields of expertise, Dr. Simonian serves on the board of directors for both the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society. She is also a fellow of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions and a member of Clinical Laboratory Scientists. Her contributions to cancer research, management of a hematology lab and published studies on lymphoma further underscore her longstanding commitment to sharing her insights and advancing vital medical knowledge.
Dr. Simonian's achievements in teaching and administration have been recognized through numerous honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science in 2024 and being the first-ever female recipient of the Brady Presidential Distinguished Professor Award in 2007. She was also named the Carnegie Utah Professor of the Year by the Library of Congress in 2005 and received accolades such as the YWCA Award for Education and Woman of the Year from The Business, highlighting her widespread reputation for leadership, compassion and dedication to her students and faculty.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Simonian is actively involved in civic activities as a volunteer with The Armenian Catholic Church. Looking back on her success thus far, she is grateful for the support of her family, friends, colleagues and students, particularly acknowledging her mother Maro, grandmother Helen and brother Simone as her biggest supporters.
In addition to her academic and professional pursuits, Dr. Simonian enjoys international line dances, taking ballet and Indian dancing classes, cooking food and engaging in creative culinary experiences with others. Looking ahead with determination, she hopes to continue her volunteer work and expand program offerings at Weber State University's College of Health Professions while supporting single mothers and international women through breast cancer research initiatives.
