His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Damascus in Syria in 1971. He furthered his education with a master's degree in physics from the American University of Beirut in 1973, followed by a PhD in physics from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1978. His postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado focused on Raman spectroscopy, which laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. Later, he joined Harvard Division of Applied Sciences as a research fellow and worked on metal composites, rapid quenching, and superconducting Josephson junctions and far-infrared radiations.

Dr. Habbal's career is distinguished by entrepreneurial ventures, including the development of digital electronics companies. He also held a long tenure as a technology leader and senior research and engineering fellow at Polaroid Corporation. In addition, he has maintained a long-standing affiliation with Harvard University, which he rejoined as a senior lecturer in applied physics, continuing in that capacity for over 25 years. His role as the former executive dean for education and research at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) underscores his leadership and commitment to advancing education. As co-director of the Master of Engineering Design program, he is pivotal in shaping multidisciplinary education that integrates system design and systems thinking.

In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Habbal is the founder of Metaphos, a startup that aims to obtain systemic composition data to enhance transparency in material identification. His dedication to innovation is further evidenced by his many patents and numerous publications, including 75 papers, 22 conference papers, and 70 invited papers and talks. These accomplishments highlight his expertise and influence in academia and industry.

Dr. Habbal's contributions have been recognized internationally, earning him an honorary doctorate in engineering from the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in Korea in 2018. This accolade honors his exemplary contributions to education and culture, outstanding research achievements and leadership.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Habbal is actively involved in civic-minded organizations and is a strong advocate for empowering young women in physics and related fields. He has supported this cause through philanthropic contributions to his alma mater, the American University of Beirut. He also serves on the boards of UTEC in Peru and Elms College, reflecting his commitment to fostering educational opportunities globally.

Dr. Habbal is a passionate educator who mentors graduate and undergraduate students and promotes active learning through lectures and publications. He wrote a book, "Reshaping Engineering Education," which advocates for multidisciplinary education, and is currently writing a book on human challenges. His personal interests include ceramics, oil painting, photography and reading about history and the origins of human civilization.
