Mr. Convis entered the automotive manufacturing sector in 1964, embarking on a career marked by his commitment to excellence and dedication. After leaving General Motors in 1968, Mr. Convis worked for Ford Motor Company in quality control and production supervision before advancing to an executive leadership role. For over 15 years, he honed his skills and eventually became the youngest assistant plant manager in the company's history at the time. Mr. Convis's tenure at Ford was marked by many significant achievements and provided him with invaluable experience that would serve him well in his subsequent years at Toyota.
In 1984, Mr. Convis was hired as general manager of the plant and played a pivotal role in establishing New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI), a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors. This collaboration was instrumental in revitalizing a shuttered plant in California, providing thousands of good-paying jobs and marking a significant milestone in his career. The NUMMI joint venture has been documented as one of the most successful large-scale joint ventures in American history. Mr. Convis led the initiative for 15 years.
Mr. Convis' career reached new heights in 2001 when he was appointed as the first American president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky. Having successfully managed Toyota's largest plant outside Japan in 2003, he was promoted to managing officer at Toyota, reporting to the board of directors. By 2007, Mr. Convis had played a key role in building Toyota's capabilities in North America, enabling the company to assemble over 2 million high-quality vehicles per year, including a vast network of high-quality local suppliers in America.
After retiring from Toyota, Mr. Convis joined Dana Holding Corporation as the chief operating officer and vice chairman, remaining in these roles from 2008 to 2010. An industry leader in traditional and electrified systems, the Ohio-based organization specializes in conventional, hybrid and electrified components.
Mr. Convis' full-time career concluded with his tenure as the chief operating officer of Bloom Energy, where he spent nearly five years leading the company's growth to a strong manufacturing producer of high-quality solid oxide fuel cells that produce clean electricity on customers' sites.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Convis is a published writer, having co-authored "The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership" with Jeffery Lyker in 2008. Additionally, he actively mentors aspiring leaders in the manufacturing and automotive industries, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experiences.
