Dr. Hundahl has enjoyed a distinguished career in surgery, marked by numerous leadership roles and significant contributions to medical research and practice. His professional contributions began when he co-founded Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii (now CareResource Hawaii) in 1986. This organization has grown to become the largest nonprofit home health care agency in Hawaii, employing over 230 individuals. Dr. Hundahl's commitment to enhancing patient care is evident in his role as a lifetime director of this organization.
Between 2002 and 2019, Dr. Hundahl served as a professor of clinical surgery at the University of California, Davis, and concurrently held the position of chief of surgery at the VA Northern California Health Care System, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. During this time, Dr. Hundahl developed multiple successful clinical collaborations with the U.S. Department of Defense and the VA system, furthering his mission to improve surgical care systems.
Before his tenure in California, Dr. Hundahl was an associate clinical professor of surgery at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1996 to 2002. He also made significant contributions to cancer research as an assistant research professor at the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, beginning in 1993. Dr. Hundahl's private practice in surgical oncology in Honolulu spanned from 1988 to 2002, during which he also served as chief of surgery at The Queen's Medical Center between 1994 and 2000.
Dr. Hundahl's leadership extended beyond his clinical roles. He chaired the Commission on Cancer from 1998 to 2000, overseeing a consortium of approximately 55 cancer organizations across the U.S. His involvement with the National Cancer Database and various committees within the American College of Surgeons highlights his dedication to advancing cancer treatment and data management.
Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Hundahl earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in 1977 and a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, from Yale University in 1981. His postgraduate training included a residency in general surgery at the University of Hawaii, completed in 1986, and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 1988. Dr. Hundahl received licensure to practice medicine in both Hawaii and California and became board-certified by the American Board of Surgery.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Hundahl has been actively involved with several civic organizations, including serving as the vice chair on the Hi-Tex division board of directors for the American Cancer Society and as the president of its Honolulu unit. His editorial work included serving as the medical editor for the Journal of Registry Management from 2000 to 2008 and authoring over 60 journal articles and more than 20 book chapters as an expert in his field.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hundahl has been recognized for his contributions with numerous awards, including being named among the Best Doctors in America every year between 1995 and 2020 and receiving the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Surgeons in 2000. His research in computer-guided surgery for gastric cancer and adjuvant chemo-radiation has been influential in shaping modern surgical practices. Dr. Hundahl attributes much of his success to his dedication and mission-oriented attitude, which was inspired by the mentors and esteemed surgeons he encountered throughout his career. As he continues to influence the field through ongoing projects and affiliations, Dr. Hundahl remains committed to excellence and innovation in health care.
