Dr. Tuakli has established a distinguished career in medicine and philanthropy, marked by her current role as the diplomatic ambassador for Mercy Ships International since 2022. In this capacity, she has been instrumental in expanding the organization's mission beyond providing free surgical and medical services to include postgraduate training for medical professionals. Her efforts have taken her across Africa, engaging with health and government officials to further the organization's goals.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Tuakli served as the chief executive officer of CHILDAccra from 2008 to 2024, where she focused on improving child health and development. Concurrently, she was the chief medical officer at Family, CHILD & Associates & Beyond The Nets from 2006 to 2024, where she played a pivotal role in advancing family health initiatives. Her earlier career includes serving as deputy director and community care advisor at Family Health International from 2001 to 2003. Prior to this, she was on faculty at Harvard Medical School and Director of Community Medicine for the Children's Hospital of Boston.
Dr. Tuakli's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science and an MB ChB from Lusaka University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka in 1976. She furthered her education by completing her LRCP and MRCS in pediatrics at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London in 1977 followed by medical training in gynecology at Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital in London in 1978. Her commitment to public health led her to earn a Master of Public Health in international health and maternal and child health from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1979.
Her dedication to civic engagement is evident through her roles as an independent non-executive board member at Carepoint since 2023 and Zenith Bank (GH) Ltd since 2019. She has also been an advisory board member for the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative since 2015. Dr. Tuakli co-founded MOREMI Leadership for Young African Women, serving on its board from 2004 to 2024, and has held various leadership positions with United Way Worldwide.
Dr. Tuakli's contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the West African Woman of Excellence award in 2020 and the Lifetime Achievement Award - Continental Africa from Africa CEO in 2018. Her numerous publications reflect her expertise and commitment to public health, with works such as "Nutrition Essential: A Guide for People Living with HIV/AIDS," published in 2006, and "Developmental & Cultural Issues of West African Children," published by Wiley and Sons Inc. in 1997.
Dr. Tuakli attributes her success to being true to herself, with a lifelong interest in advancing women and children's health and effective medicine. She is always willing to lend a helping hand, offer advice or provide encouragement to those who seek it during difficult times. Her commitment to authenticity is a fundamental part of who she is.
In her personal life, Dr. Tuakli cherishes spending time with her twins, one of whom is a writer and playwright known for authoring "Ghana Must Go," while the other is a professor of sports medicine at Stanford University. Her interests include tropical horticulture and traditional herbal medicine.
