Marked by his current role as the assistant vice president of strategic partnerships at Elon University, Mr. Roush has established a prominent career in business journalism and academia. Since 2024, he has been instrumental in developing relationships with foundations, corporations and nonprofit entities across North Carolina. His longstanding expertise in business journalism is exemplified by his founding of Talking Biz News in 2005, a digital publication that attracts more than 1 million visitors annually and serves as a vital resource for industry professionals.

Prior to assuming his role at Elon University, Mr. Roush served as the executive editor of Business North Carolina from 2023 to 2024, during which he played a significant role in forming digital strategies for the magazine's website and newsletters. His academic journey includes a tenure at Quinnipiac University, where he was the dean of the School of Communications from 2019 to 2023. During this time, he spearheaded a new five-year strategic plan, a diversity program and various fundraising efforts for the institution. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, he also chaired a task force to identify new operational methods for the university.

From 2002 to 2019, Mr. Roush held the Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor title at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also served as senior associate dean and master's program director within the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He began his career in journalism with roles as a reporter for several esteemed publications, including Bloomberg News, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, BusinessWeek, The Tampa Tribune and St. Petersburg Times. His transition into academia was fueled by his passion for teaching and publishing in business journalism, leading him to author five books and numerous articles on the subject.

Before venturing onto his vocational path, Mr. Roush earned a Master of Arts in mass communication from the University of Florida in 1990 and a bachelor's degree in history and journalism with a minor in political science from Auburn University in 1987.

Mr. Roush's contributions extend beyond academia through his involvement with various professional organizations such as the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. To complement his professional accomplishments, Mr. Roush is actively engaged with civic-minded organizations like the North Carolina Biotechnology Advisory Council, which identifies key opportunities and addresses educational gaps within the field. His contributions have seen him recognized with numerous accolades, including the Ed Vick Prize for Innovation in Teaching and the Charles E. Scripps Award for Journalism Teacher of the Year. Furthermore, he was named North Carolina Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education in 2010.

Mr. Roush's personal life is enriched by his wife and two sons — one a business journalist and the other working in finance — and his enjoyment of playing basketball. He is currently working on a new edition of his business journalism textbook "Show Me the Money" and aims to continue influencing higher education positively at Elon University while helping more students achieve success on their own journeys.
