Dr. Brown has carved a remarkable path, blending scientific rigor with a passion for mentorship and innovation. His journey was recently recognized with induction into the Rice University Texas Medical Center of Sigma Xi for his lifelong profound impact on scientific research in mathematics, engineering and microbiology. This journey has illustrated that Dr. Brown is equally comfortable and proficient in roles ranging from the board room and financials, marketing business development with venture capitalists, execution of field construction engineering, and software development to research in the lab. Currently, he serves as a senior consultant at Shell, a testament to his enduring diverse expertise.
Dr. Brown's academic foundation was laid at The University of Kansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical petroleum engineering. He continued his education at Texas A&M University, culminating in a Master of Science and a PhD in chemical engineering. During his time at Texas A&M, he became enthralled with teaching. Throughout his time as an educator, he received multiple recognitions.
Dr. Brown's professional journey began at VLSI in semiconductor manufacturing in photolithography. He transitioned industries to Setpoint Inc. as a lead petrochemical project engineer with projects worldwide. Later, he was a discovery, consulting and research and development (R&D) engineer at Koch Industries, followed by a similar role as a discovery and principal engineer at Lyondell/Basell Industries. Since 2009, he has served as the principal for Alert Conformance Technology, working in diverse arenas from semiconductor and petrochemical to environmental cleanup. Finally, Dr. Brown joined Shell in 2012 and serves as a global subject matter expert, illustrating diverse areas of mastery, working in locations around the world with extraordinary teams across industries.
One of Dr. Brown's many notable achievements was his assignment to the enhanced problem-solving team tasked with starting up and achieving sustainable operation of the largest new petrochemical construction project in the United States. The effort was successful in meeting goals in less than three years. Dr. Brown emphasizes informed reasoning regarding decision-making processes — adhering to engineering first principles and fostering common-sense team practices that prioritize employee safety, environmental protection and revenue maximization. He has developed corporate governance that directly impacted companies' operations and profitability.
Beyond his corporate roles, Dr. Brown is deeply committed to giving back to his profession and community. His dedication includes volunteering and mentoring young engineers. Notably, he mentored a high school computer science team that achieved national recognition in the Zero Robotics Autonomous Space Capture Challenge sponsored by DARPA and NASA. The students presented at MIT and ultimately watched their software run in space by NASA.
Dr. Brown has published numerous papers. He began his research career in high school, becoming the first-ever three-time International Science Fair Champion and Westinghouse Finalist. His first patent was in biochemical processes, received at age 17. He has contributed to the development of numerous patents under NDAs, illustrating his desire to contribute to advancements over notoriety.
Dr. Brown's leadership style focuses less on traditional management and is more attuned to guiding and inspiring the team. He has demonstrated success in roles from pure research and development to engineering execution and corporate governance. His industry experience spans from semiconductors and petrochemicals to software development. He has served on a software company's board and later as chairman, focused on transforming its software to usability and illustrating his flexibility in yet another industry.
