CHAPEL HILL, NC, July 23, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michele Levy has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Levy has enjoyed a fulfilling and successful career in academia, marked by her dedication to teaching, research and publishing in the field of Comparative Literature. Dr. Levy served from 1981 to 2002 as a professor and chair of the English Department at Xavier University of Louisiana. Her leadership and commitment to excellence were evident as she guided the department and beyond through numerous academic advancements. Throughout, she mentored students who have achieved significant success in their fields, becoming professors, holding special chairs, and winning international awards, while others became writers, established programs to help people both in and out of academia, and served their communities in various ways.
Then, as a chair and professor at North Carolina A&T State University from 2002 to 2015, she was instrumental in shaping the institution's academic landscape and mentoring students, many of whom have gone on to earn advanced degrees, enter academia, or pursue other professional areas.
Dr. Levy, herself, is a highly accomplished author and researcher, with expertise in English, French, and Russian literature from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to which she added postcolonial studies and Balkan literature, history, and culture. Her academic journey began at Bryn Mawr College, which she left for work and study in Washington, D.C, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in History with honors from The George Washington University in 1970. Thereafter, she pursued a Master of Arts and PhD, both in Comparative Literature, from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in 1973 and 1980, respectively.
Of her numerous professional achievements, Dr. Levy takes pride in having taught at two historically Black universities, and having participated in a number of specially funded grant programs to deliver seminars in writing and literature funded by Bard College, the NAACP, the United Negro College Fund, an NEH summer grant program at Harvard, several summer programs for high school language and teachers from the Louisiana Endowment for The Humanities, and an invitation from the Serbian government to attend a writers' festival in Belgrade. Notably, Academia.edu places her among the top four percent of those cited on the platform, an achievement that highlights the global impact of her scholarship.
Since retiring from North Carolina A&T State University, Dr. Levy has held the title of professor emerita. She has likewise continued to write and teach; in 2020, she published "Anna's Dance: A Balkan Odyssey," a novel that reflects her deep engagement with Balkan history and literature, is working on a second text about a Bosnian asylee in New Orleans, and several times each year reviews new works of Balkan literature for World Literature Today. Finally, she has developed and taught a number of courses for retired professionals in Chapel Hill, most recently on Balkan history through Balkan literature.
In her free time, Dr. Levy enjoys walking, spending time in nature, Balkan dancing and reading. A mother of three and grandmother of seven, she attributes her success to a combination of passion and good fortune, which have guided her throughout her career. Looking forward, she aspires to continue thinking about complex issues, like ethnicity and identity, as she strives to understand the human condition.
