Notably, she served as Chair of Minority Affairs for North Carolina's 12th Congressional District. Her personal experience with hospice care inspired her to join Maxim Healthcare Services, where she served as a hospice nurse from 2011 to 2014. She also worked as a consultant from 2012 to 2013, providing expert insight into nursing practices. Earlier, Ms. Cunningham served as a health care educator at HPE Healthcare Professionals Institute from 2010 to 2012, mentoring future medical professionals.

Ms. Cunningham's academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Winston-Salem State University, which she earned in 2009, and an Associate Degree in Nursing from Gaston College, which she obtained in 1996. She also earned a diploma as a Licensed Practical Nurse from Central Piedmont Community College in 1981. Additionally, Ms. Cunningham has been a licensed Registered Nurse since 1996 and maintains CPR certification.

In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. Cunningham has been actively involved in numerous civic and community efforts. She has held numerous leadership positions, including serving as a precinct chair for the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party and as first vice chair of the Mecklenburg County Democratic Women's Caucus. Additionally, Ms. Cunningham actively supports organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the North Carolina Food Bank, Hope Haven, Life Span and the YMCA.

Ms. Cunningham's legislative impact and advocacy efforts have been recognized with numerous awards. She is the recipient of the 2024 North Carolina Nurses Association Board of Directors Legislator of the Year Award and has received multiple Legislator of the Year honors from esteemed organizations, including NAMI, NC Child and the NC Association of Nurse Anesthetists. These accolades highlight Ms. Cunningham's distinguished presence in the realm of mental health, public health and community engagement.

Outside her professional pursuits, Ms. Cunningham enjoys fishing, music, gardening, interior decorating and spending time with her family.
