Since 2025, she has served as an OPS environmental consultant at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), where she continues to contribute her expertise in air quality regulations and policy. Previously, she served as the environmental manager at DEP from 2020 to 2023, during which time she received several accolades for her innovative contributions. Her earlier roles include serving as an environmental specialist III and II at DEP from 2016 to 2020, where she was recognized for her public education efforts in emergency and hazardous waste management. Throughout her tenure with DEP, she supervised staff to ensure projects were completed by deadlines, liaised between the department and the public, mentored and coached direct reports and conducted inspections to assess compliance. She also served as a statewide subject matter expert for air quality and hazardous waste regulations.
Ms. Irwin's academic background laid a strong foundation for her career achievements. She earned a Master of Science in geosciences with a focus on applied meteorology from Mississippi State University in 2016. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in geosciences with a concentration in atmospheric sciences and meteorology from Florida International University, completed in 2014. Additionally, she pursued coursework in geography and geographic information systems at Broward College from 2007 to 2009 and completed a graduate certificate in natural resource policy and administration from the University of Florida in 2019. These academic pursuits have equipped her with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions that positively impact the community.
Ms. Irwin's commitment to professional development is reflected in her numerous certifications. She is planning to pursue the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) certification and has completed courses such as "Communicating Climate Change" and "Public Servants and Climate Change: Reaching Net Zero" through Apolitical in 2023, which further underscores her dedication to advancing her expertise.
Ms. Irwin's passion for atmospheric sciences was sparked by her childhood experiences with hurricanes in Florida, which initially inspired her to become a hurricane forecaster. This passion now drives her work in climate science, where she aims to educate others about atmospheric and climate sciences while making impactful decisions for the community. She attributes much of her success to her long-term partner's support, which has helped shape her understanding of family and contributed significantly to her achievements.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Ms. Irwin is actively involved in civic organizations, including the AMF Davie Youth Club and the South Broward High School Marine Magnet Program. Additionally, she is aligned with the International Geography Honor Society, the Urban Sustainability Directors Network, the Southeast Sustainability Directors Network, and the Green Infrastructure Leadership Exchange. Her contributions extend to scientific publications, including works on precipitation patterns in South Florida and the factors that influence severe tropical cyclone formation. Her awards include the DEP Regulatory Award for Excellence in Innovation, which she received in 2021, and the DEP Living Our Values Award, which she received in 2020. Similarly, Ms. Irwin received the Thomas Yatabe Certificate of Appreciation, which was awarded by the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council and the State Emergency Response Commission in 2019.
Looking ahead, Ms. Irwin envisions herself leading initiatives focused on climate adaptation, hazard mitigation, and community sustainability within local government or nonprofit organizations.
