Mr. D'Angelo has established himself as a leading expert in public-private partnerships, demonstrating a remarkable ability to bridge the gap between the private sector and local government. In his current capacity as strategic partnerships manager at the National League of Cities, he provides guidance to dozens of partners and sponsors, covering all major industries. Additionally, he has been responsible for identifying innovative solutions and modern approaches to city governance. His work ensures that city leaders have access to essential resources, creating opportunities for specialized education, creative funding mechanisms and trust building between private sector and public leaders.
A significant aspect of Mr. D'Angelo's role involves consulting for a diverse range of organizations, from Fortune 500 companies like Wells Fargo to emerging technology startups. He connects these entities with influential figures in local government, recruits new partners and coordinates large-scale activations. By facilitating communication between public officials and private sector innovators, he helps identify champions within local government who can drive meaningful change in their communities. His efforts include managing relationships with key industry organizations such as the National Apartment Association, Enterprise Mobility, Indigov, and AT&T.
Through 2022, Mr. D'Angelo served as manager of sponsorships at the National League of Cities. In this role, he was instrumental in developing and delivering benefits for the organization's centennial celebration—a milestone marking its 100th anniversary. This initiative involved a yearlong collaboration with four companies making up NLC's Centennial Collection (nlc100.org). Mr. D'Angelo has facilitated discussions on critical issues such as economic development, infrastructure buildout, and how we build communal spaces that work for everyone. The centennial celebration showcased the impact of public private partnerships across America through the AI in Cities Report, the Recycle Right Toolkit, and the countless introductions made across NLC's 100th year.
Before joining the National League of Cities, Mr. D'Angelo built a strong foundation at the Edison Electric Institute in Washington, D.C. As coordinator of external affairs from 2020 to 2022, he managed relationships between investor-owned electric companies and local governments nationwide. He worked closely with organizations such as the National League of Cities and the Democratic Mayors Association to foster collaboration between electric company leaders and municipal officials.
From 2017 to 2020, Mr. D'Angelo held the position of legal and contracts assistant at Edison Electric Institute, where he developed expertise in legal matters related to contracts and organizational structures such as 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6) associations. His attention to detail and ability to engage with diverse stakeholders were further honed during his tenure in these roles.
Truly, Mr. D'Angelo began his professional journey as a field organizer for the North Carolina Democratic Party in 2016, focusing on voter outreach in Greensboro and High Point during a highly competitive election cycle. He previously worked as a legal assistant at Smith Law Firm PLC from 2015 to 2016, where he concentrated on divorce and family law cases.
Throughout his career, Mr. D'Angelo has been an active member of industry-related organizations, serving as president of Alpha Chi and president of the Model United Nations at Christopher Newport University. These roles reflect his commitment to leadership development and international engagement.
Mr. D'Angelo's academic background has played a pivotal role in shaping his professional achievements. He earned a Master of Arts in political management from The George Washington University in the District of Columbia in 2020. This advanced degree provided him with practical skills taught by professors actively working in politics and public affairs. He also holds a bachelor's degree in political science and Leadership Studies from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, graduating in 2015.
His educational journey was influenced by supportive mentors, including college professors, his current Director, and a mentor at Edison Electric Institute, who encouraged him to pursue graduate studies and explore new career paths. The skills he developed early on, such as attention to detail, effective scheduling and customer service have been instrumental throughout his career.
Mr. D'Angelo's commitment extends beyond his professional responsibilities into civic engagement. He has contributed to the development of fundraisers, beautification projects and resource-gathering initiatives for local initiatives. In his personal life, Mr. D'Angelo enjoys attending theater performances, participating in community theater productions, gardening and gaming, while convincing others to adopt rescue cats. His pride and joy, Bijou, is a 10-yr old orange tabby.
Looking ahead, Mr. D'Angelo is dedicated to advancing civility within government through programs such as NLC Outreach, a modern and highly personalized approach to developing better rapport between local leaders and their residents - a desperate need in today's politics. Mr. D'Angelo envisions continued growth within the local government sector or potentially advancing within association leadership circles such as those comprising the "Big Seven" network of local government associations. Ultimately, his North Star is to create opportunities for engagement that drive positive change for cities and residents nationwide.
